Learning Goals After completing the activities in this slideshow lecture you should be able to… 1. Calculate the number of sheets needed for a job based on job specifications 2. Understand what CWT Pricing is and what CWT stands for 3. Understand what M Sheet Pricing is 4. Use the CWT and M Sheet pricing formulas to calculate paper prices 5. Calculate the # of sheets needed for a job (based on # out), the weight of paper required, and the paper price as one problem

Steps for Calculating Paper Prices (CWT vs M Sheet) 1. How many sheets of paper are needed to produce the job? 2. How much does the paper weigh? 3. What is the price of the paper based on its weight (CWT) or based on the number of sheets needed (M sheet)?

How Many Sheets Are Needed? How many sheets of paper are needed to produce

How Many Sheets Are Needed? How many sheets of paper are needed to produce a job? The first step in calculating the price of paper (whether you are using CWT or M Sheet pricing) is to establish how many sheets are needed to produce the job. The formula for calculating # of sheets needed is… Quantity being produced # out per sheet = Total number of sheets needed Always round up the number of sheets needed to the next whole number. We can’t purchase partial sheets and we can’t round down or our final quantity produced will not be fulfilled.

How Many Sheets Are Needed? Steps for Calculating # Out Per Sheet: Use the same steps for calculating # out in a shipping container for calculating the # out of a press sized printing sheet. (Slides 8 -12 from the Packaging & Shipping Lecture)

How Many Sheets Are Needed? Steps for Calculating # Out Per Sheet: Calculating the

How Many Sheets Are Needed? Steps for Calculating # Out Per Sheet: Calculating the Number Out within a 2 D Surface: When calculating how many will fit out you must test your printed item size against the sheet 2 D surface size two times. We first test it as if the objects are placed horizontally and then we test it with the objects placed vertically. For example, if we wanted to see how many 5 in x 7 in post cards will fit on one 23 in x 35 in press size sheet (PSS), we must see how many 5 in x 7 in cards fit on the 23 in x 35 in sheet and then test the cards as 7 in x 5 in going on to a 23 in x 35 in surface reversing the orientation. We are in essence rotating the cards 90 degrees to see if more will fit that direction/orientation.

How Many Sheets Are Needed? Formula For Calculating Number Out (you must always test

How Many Sheets Are Needed? Formula For Calculating Number Out (you must always test it 2 ways!) Test Option 1: Paper Size Length x Item to be printed size length Paper Size Width = Item to be printed size width Test Option 2: Paper Size Length Item to be printed size width x Paper Size Width Item to be printed size length = Take the whole number result of each division problem (disregard the decimals… we can only print whole items) and multiply them together. This will be the total number of items that fit out in the box.

How Many Sheets Are Needed? Test Option 1: How many 5 in x 7

How Many Sheets Are Needed? Test Option 1: How many 5 in x 7 in post cards can we get out of a 23 in x 35 in sheet of paper (PSS)? Test Option 1: 23 in 35 in x 5 in = Option 1= 4. 6 x 5 or 4 x 5 since we only use the whole number. 7 in 4 x 5= 20 out (We can fit 20 5 in x 7 in postcards on one 23 in x 35 in sheet of paper) 23 in 35 in 20 out = 23 in x 35 in press sheet (PSS) = 5 in x 7 in post cards

How Many Sheets Are Needed? Test Option 2: How many 7 in x 5

How Many Sheets Are Needed? Test Option 2: How many 7 in x 5 in post cards can we get out of a 35 in x 23 in sheet of paper (PSS)? Test Option 2: 23 in 35 in x 7 in = Option 2= 3. 29 x 7 or 3 x 7 since we only use the whole number. 5 in 3 x 7= 21 out (We can fit 21 5 in x 7 in postcards on one 23 in x 35 in sheet of paper) 23 in 35 in 21 out = 23 in x 35 in press sheet (PSS) = 7 in x 5 in post cards

How Many Sheets Are Needed? How many sheets of paper are needed to produce

How Many Sheets Are Needed? How many sheets of paper are needed to produce a job? Once we have calculated the total number of units that can be printed on one press sized sheet (PSS), we can finish the formula for calculating the total number of sheets needed. That formula is… Quantity being produced # out per sheet = Total number of sheets needed Always round up the number of sheets need to the next whole number. We can’t purchase partial sheets and we can’t round down or our final quantity produced will not be fulfilled.

We can’t purchase partial sheets and we can’t round down or our final quantity produced will not be fulfilled. 71, 429 sheets need to be purchased (We calculated 21 out on SLIDE 9)

How Much Does the Paper Weigh? The weight of paper is calculated using a very specific formula. Use the following formula to calculate the weight of paper. This formula requires the user to know the following information: 1. How many sheets of paper do you need? 2. What size paper are your purchasing? 3. What is the basic size of the paper you are purchasing? 4. What is the basis weight of the paper you are purchasing? If you do not know this information or are not given this information you must calculate it.

How Much Does the Paper Weigh? Formula for Calculating Paper Weight: Your paper size

How Much Does the Paper Weigh? Formula for Calculating Paper Weight: Your paper size Basic paper size x This is the only value in the equation that does not change. It will always be 500. We divide by 500 because the basis weight is the weight of 500 sheets. # of sheets 500 x Basis Weight = Total Weight of Paper

How Much Does the Paper Weigh? Let’s continue our example from the previous slides.

How Much Does the Paper Weigh? Let’s continue our example from the previous slides. How much does 71, 429 sheets of 23 in x 35 in 80# opaque text weigh? 23 x 35 25 x 38 x 71, 429 sheets 500 sheets x 80# = Total Weight of Paper 23 x 35 is the size of paper we are purchasing 25 x 38 is the basic size of opaque stock (see your notes from the Paper Weights lecture) 71, 429 is the number of sheets and 80# is the basis weight of the paper we’re purchasing Do not round any values until you have found the final answer. Some of the values will be very long decimals. DO NOT ROUND THEM! Round the final weight to 2 decimal places. This example is unique. By rounding to 2 decimal places the answer becomes a whole number.

CWT Pricing is the pricing of paper 100 lbs. C stands for 100 and WT standards for weight. The formula for calculating paper based on the CWT (Hundred Weight Pricing) is… # of lbs of paper being purchased 100 x CWT Pricing = Total price of paper being purchased
