What do we mean by P-3? It means a lot of things: Ø An age range (4 – 8 years, or age 3 to grade 3) or B-3 (birth – 8 years) Ø Program range (prekindergarten – 3 rd grade), or P-3 Ø Systems approach New York State Education Department Office of Early Learning
Putting Our Work into a P 3 Perspective The goal is to communicate the continuum of development and learning progression of P-3 by leveraging the roll-out of revised standards and to communicate opportunities to make shifts in the instructional cycle to better address early learning. In NY, we are talking about children, teachers, administrators, and families within the prekindergarten to third grade frame. New York State Education Department Office of Early Learning

Some states use this term to include programs serving children from prenatal through third grade. · · A new initiative or extra effort A new set of requirements that will add to the burden of educators and educational leaders A mandate that requires extra resources and distracts from community priorities A term that refers to prenatal through age three programs and services. Introduction to the Early Learning Standards “Rather than prescribe a lockstep progression of lessons or curricula for all children in all settings, the Standards serve to articulate the expectations of what children can learn and do as a result of instruction that is not standardized, but personalized, differentiated, adapted, culturally and linguistically relevant, and context-based. While we may have the same learning objectives for all children, our means for meeting these objectives are highly responsive to the individual child. ” Dr. Zoila Morrell New York State Education Department Office of Early Learning
