WHAT IS THE INCLUSME PROJECT? • Inclu. SMe stands for ‘Intercultural learning in mathematics and science education’ offers a constructive contribution for tackling one of Europe’s greatest challenges: • education for an increasing number of refugee and immigrant youth • to integrate them into educational systems • to provide for stable, socially cohesive societies thus contributes to making initial education of prospective maths and science teachers more relevant and more adapted to societal challenges of an increasingly diverse Europe

INCLUSME AIMS ON increasing the quality of higher education curricula for prospective maths and science teachers by linking maths and science education with intercultural learning; strengthening students’ social, civic and intercultural competences; equipping prospective teachers with the skills to deal with challenges of multicultural classrooms; promoting student mobility to enable first-hand intercultural experiences; strengthening transnational cooperation between universities in establishing mobility programmes for maths and science students ; a greater progress towards curriculum innovation with respect to the inclusion of intercultural learning as an integral part of maths and science subject didactics.

WHY INTERCULTURAL SCIENCE LEARNING OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL? • The environmental challenges in today’s society

WHY INTERCULTURAL SCIENCE LEARNING OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL? • The environmental challenges in today’s society are growing simultaneously with the challenges faced by school due to increasing cultural diversity; • Future science teachers need to be equipped with knowledge and skills to teach topics related to education for sustainable development in an intercultural context; • The culture and knowledge pupils bring from their homes and families are valued, and can serve as starting point for learning; • Under appropriate guidance, the benefits of learning science outside the classroom have been well documented, e. g. • • Giving all pupils room to develop their potentials Valuing multiple perspectives Developing pupils’ personal and social skills Strengthening the cognitive aspects by the affective

WHAT DOES INTELLECTUAL OUTPUTS OFFER FOR PROSPECTIVE MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHERS? • Become aware of the benefits of “outside of school” for learning scientific concepts and procedures in an intercultural context; • Learn to value the importance of concrete out-of-school experience to bridge communication/language problems; • Appreciate the intercultural background and pre-knowledge of pupils as resources rather than barriers for learning scientific concepts and procedures; • Develop pedagogical approaches by using different arenas to promote creativity, language learning and conceptual understanding; • Develop competency in teaching topics related to the diversity of nature (ecology, evolution, energy and nutrient cycles) in an intercultural context.
