Listening Guide- Firestone D major Slightly Fast Tempo Piano, Drum set, Cymbals, Shakers, Tambourine, and as well as synthesizer instrumentation 4/4 simple quadruple meter Simple 4 bar piano theme
Listening Guide- Firestone part 1 0: 00 Introduction The song begins with a 4 bars of soft piano that sets the underlining theme. The piano plays the chord progression using the lower registers of the piano; holding the notes for the entire measure (all 4 counts) before changing to the next chord The entrance of the percussion (cymbals, hihat, snare, etc. ) the rhythm is kept by the tambourine. This provides contrast to the smoothing piano theme. 0: 10 Introduction- B 0: 33 1 st Verse The vocals finally start. The tambourine accents the change before percussion fades and the piano theme stops but the piano and synth continue accompanying softly the singer. The tambourine accents the singer he sings “up” at 0: 51. 1: 09 Chorus The chorus starts with the tambourine again accenting the change from the verse to the chorus. The tempo increases slightly and theme enters again although in a different, slightly higher key along with synth. 1: 28 Chorus- B The piano/synth becomes more prominent by increasing the volume (dynamic change) preparing for the midsection. The drums accent the off beats. At 1: 44 the percussion stops again with the tambourine accenting the change. 1: 47 Midsection The singer stops and the music picks up for the dance break. The synth and the piano continue embellishing theme with the piano providing harmony. 2; 05 Midsection-B The bass synth is introduced to plays alongside the piano harmony even becoming more prominent than the piano harmony and synth. Also a drum kick is added to emphasis the off beats. 2: 19 Midsection- C The singer is introduced again although only to add theme and claps, snaps added to accent the off beats and every time the 4 bar theme ends the clap and stomp is added to accent in place of the snap on the off beat to provide contrast. At 2: 39 theme and the singer stop with the synth ends with a sudden fad effect. 2: 42 Verse 2 The singer begins again with the piano accompaniment without theme. The synth accents at 2: 57 the beginning of the chorus as the singer holds a rest
Listening Guide- Firestone pt. 2 3: 00 2 nd Chorus The chorus repeats exactly the same as the first it was introduced with theme beginning played by the piano and synth. However it creates contrast by providing a new percussion rhythm to accent theme (hihat, snap, drum) The tambourine again accents the B section of the chorus beginning. Everything the same as Chorus B but the new percussion rhythm line continues. 3: 19 2 nd Chorus B 3: 34 Midsection Repeat- A Contains the same characteristics as the Midsection- A 3: 52 Midsection Repeat- B Exactly the same as Midsection B except this time includes the singer and starting at 4: 00 the tambourine begins to mark the off beats. 4: 09 Midsection repeat- C The tambourine marks the beginning of the repeat and continues. Other than this the song continues as normal with the snaps, clap, stomp effect until the singer sings firestone as the percussion stops and the fade effect is used again.
