Inspiring Great Thinkers World Language Latin Course Goal: An introduction to the grammar and vocabulary of the Latin language, as well as the history and culture of the Classical world. Through their study of Latin, students gain a clearer understanding of English grammar. Course Sequence: Ø Latin II (9 th grade): First year Latin. Students are introduced to the basic grammar of the Latin language, including noun declension and verb conjugation, verb tenses (active and passive), pronouns, irregular verbs and case usage. ØLatin 1. 5 (9 th grade): First year Latin. Students use basically the same curriculum as Latin II, but the class size is smaller and more class time is allotted for homework. Students complete a basic survey of Latin grammar, focusing on more complex grammatical structures such as the use of participles, infinitives, the subjunctive, indirect discourse, etc. ØLatin Literature (11 th and 12 th grades): Students focus on reading and translating the poetry of the ancient Romans. The course alternates every other year between the study of epic verse (Vergil and his Aeneid) and lyric verse (selections from Ovid’s Metamorphoses as well as the poetry of Catullus and Horace). Inspiring Great Thinkers Service Hours and Presentation ØEvery student will be assigned to an advisor, like a homeroom. This advisor will follow the student through the entire four years, where possible. ØThe Advisor will provide the student with the details for logging the service hours and for doing the presentation at the end of the year. ØService hours may include service time at school, church, scouts, etc. Projects should not be raising money for something by asking parents, etc. It should require the student DOING something for someone or an agency.
