Round vs. Flat Characters � � � More fully developed and described Have multiple sides to their character (can be complicated) Realistic and life-like Not easily defined because we know so many details about the character. “capable of surprising the audience in a convincing way” (E. M. Forster) Round Characters �Not welldeveloped �Easily defined in a single sentence because we know little about the character �Sometimes stereotyped Flat Characters
Static vs. Dynamic Characters � Dynamic = moving � Experience changes throughout the plot of a narrative. � Sometimes change is gradual, sometimes it is sudden. � (Usually round characters) � Static = not moving � Stay the same throughout the course of the narrative � (Usually flat characters) Dynamic Characters Static Characters
