Significance of “the seed of woman” and “enmity” – Gen 3 • In the Pentateuch the being of evil and his nature accurately captured (II Cor 11: 3 [craftiness]; I Tim 2: 14 [deceiver]; Jn 8: 44 [liar]) in the angel Satan (nachash – shining/burning one, used of serpents (Moses’ bronze) and of seraphim). • Satan (shaitan) means accuser, adversary, ‘malicious prosecutor’; as slanderer-accuser he maligns both God and man; • Gen 3: 1 - Heb: ‛[ ערום a ru m] – subtle, conceal, shrewed-deceive, contrive, fraud-crafter, naked; [derived meanings – crafty, wily, etymology – a weaver of delicate and intricate designs]; used in Prov 7: 10 of the heart of a harlot. • Gen 3: 1 LXX Gk: φρονιμώτατος [phrone-MOH-tatos; wise in the way of thinking; [compared to ‘any of the beasts of the field’]; Satan is a creature-angel, neither beast nor man. • State between God and Satan, w/ man as a soulful-creature in God’s image, is spiritual warfare prior to sin, and in Gen 3 becomes the state between Satan and man; enmity, hatred, proactive perpetual plotting of hostility by Satan against man in general, specifically against “the seed of woman”.

Significance of “the seed of woman” and “enmity” – Gen 3 • Gen 3:

Significance of “the seed of woman” and “enmity” – Gen 3 • Gen 3: 15 God puts hatred/hostility between the woman and Satan, between Satan’s seed and her seed. • Heb never uses plural of ‘seed’ to refer to offspring or posterity; it is a collective noun which can designate a whole line of descendants or lineage, or it may denote one person epitomizing the whole. • “between thy seed and her seed; he shall crush thy head…” • The seed of woman (see Gal 3: 16, 19 for Abrahamic context) shall be a male; one who will suffer a brief temporary wound from Satan but will strike a crushing destructive blow overcoming and depriving Satan of power. [Isa 53: 12 => Acts 2: 24 => Heb 2: 14 => Rev 12: 10; 20: 10] • Though not explicit, God’s statement infers that the seed shall be of woman-only as He is silent on man. (Isa. 7: 14 [Immanu-el] Gal 4: 4 -5 [“…His Son, born of a woman”]); Heb 2: 9; 14 -15) • The seed of Satan designates his line of ‘descendants’ as a single unit; those who follow him; Jn 7: 41; 8: 44; Rev 12: 3 -4 • Satan as murderer: through lies caused Eve to sin, cutting man off; through lies he worked to kill the seed of woman. [Gen 3: 15 => Lk 24: 44]

Significance of “the seed of woman” and “enmity” – Gen 3 • In the

Significance of “the seed of woman” and “enmity” – Gen 3 • In the collective sense of ‘seed’, the hatred/hostility between Satan/his seed and woman/her seed would exist between Satan and his followers (the world) and the collective seed-lineage ancestry (Seth-Enoch-Noah. Abraham, etc. ) selected by God and through which He would work His plan. • Distinction must always be made between the nation-land promise and the spiritual promise (“in thy seed shall the nations…be blessed”). • In the singular sense of ‘seed’, the hostility between Satan and the seed is that effort exerted against the Messiah, His purpose, His work, His Word. • So what? • From Gen 3 onward it is God’s proclaimed plan to crush the power of Satan within the created & spiritual domains (man had handed to Satan); through the seed “he” would crush Satan’s head (dominion). • Fulfillment of the divine plan is announced with the foretelling; “he will crush…”; God (who cannot lie) will complete what He announced Is 46: 10. • The crushing will be performed by ‘the seed’ from the lineage chosen; only the messiah is of this lineage. • no purpose for or prophecy of others (J. Smith, Muhammad, etc. )

Enoch (pre-flood) Jude 4 For there are certain men…even they who were of old

Enoch (pre-flood) Jude 4 For there are certain men…even they who were of old written of beforehand unto this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness. . . 11 Woe unto them! For they went in the way of Cain… 14 And to these also Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, Behold, the Lord came with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their works of ungodliness which they have ungodly wrought, and of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. • Gen 5: Seth (912 yrs) – [Enosh-Kenan-Mahalalel-Jared] Enoch (365) – Methusaleh – Lamech - Noah; all had other sons and daughters (but only one lineage recorded => the seed of woman). • Enoch “walked with God; and he was not for God took him. ” (Gen 5: 23) ~1, 000 years before the flood, man knew: • who/what is ungodly; the way of Cain & his descendants => Satan’s ‘seed’ • who/what is righteous; Enoch – Noah; “Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generations; Noah walked with God. ” Gen 6: 9

Enoch (pre-flood) Jude 1: 4 …those who were long beforehand marked out for this

Enoch (pre-flood) Jude 1: 4 …those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men… 8 Yet in the same manner these men…defile the flesh, and reject authority… 10 But these men revile things which they do not understand; 11 Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain…for whom the black darkness has been reserved forever. 14 And about these also Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, "Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones, 15 to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him. " So what? ~1, 000 years before the flood: • God, who “declares the end from the beginning” (Isa 46: 10), revealed to man very early that judgment day is coming (prophesied as has come). • From the context of ‘the way of Cain’, this ‘way’ was understood during the times of descendants of Cain and Seth; => that eternal darkness is reserved for such may have been foretold as well (Satan’s seed). • Interestingly, Jude uses “kurios” or Lord (one having supreme authority); what word Enoch actually used is unknown, but the HS preserves this one.

Job 16: 19 -21 NAS - Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven,

Job 16: 19 -21 NAS - Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, And my advocate is on high (term used for where God is). ASV - Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven, And he that voucheth for me is on high. YLT - Also, now, lo, in the heavens is my witness, And my testifier in the high places. 20 My interpreter is my friend, Unto God hath mine eye dropped: 21 And he reasoneth for a man with God, And a son of man for his friend. NIV - Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend. Job expresses confidence that he has an advocate, vouching witness, testifier on his behalf, in heaven. • “He reasoneth for man with God” I Jn 2: 1 - if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ

Job 19: 25 -27 “But as for me I know that my Redeemer liveth,

Job 19: 25 -27 “But as for me I know that my Redeemer liveth, And at last he will stand up upon the earth: 26 And after my skin, even this skin, is destroyed, then without my flesh shall I see God; 27 Whom I, even I, shall see, on my side, And mine eyes shall behold (Him), and not as a stranger. My heart is consumed within me. “ • much of Christ and heaven in these verses: Job was given by God to proclaim w/ certainty what he knew, that his personal living and eternal one as rescuer, redeemer, vindicator, deliverer (a perpetual one - from the Gk. ἀέναός [Heb: go’el; debt-purchaser]) would make Himself visible at some later time and would stand upon the earth (dust) in the flesh. • That he, Job, was to look for the resurrection and life of the world to come as “without my flesh” he would in his spiritual form see God with his own eyes and behold Him as vindicator, and not (Job) be estranged. • In the depth of despair and hopelessness, Job is convinced His Rescuer lives as the perpetual (eternal) One; that He will appear in the flesh upon the dust of the earth, that he will behold God with his own eyes when he is without his earthly flesh.

“ Heb: go’el; debt-purchaser - in the Pentateuch signifies: • the close relative (kinsman) morally obligated to aid/rescue his fellow kinsman from danger/trouble [e. g. Abraham as Lot’s redeemer] • the close kinsman responsible under the civil laws of Israel for marrying the widow of a brother who died childless (Deut 25: 5 ff), or • one buying back a piece of property that was in danger of being lost from a family's inheritance. Lev 25: 24 [before the jubilee/50 th year – Lev 25: 10 ff] • Boaz in the Book of Ruth was such a kinsman-redeemer • Boaz – Obed – Jesse – David • (Salmon m. Rahab) => Boaz [Josh 6: 25 – Mt 1: 5]

God Unveils/Proclaims Fulfillment of His Plan to Choosing the Lineage The Seed of Woman

God Unveils/Proclaims Fulfillment of His Plan to Choosing the Lineage The Seed of Woman – enmity w/ Satan: Gen. 3 Perpetual enmity/hatred between seed of woman and seed of Satan • the seed “he” will crush Satan’s head / power. • the seed His heel will be bruised. • of woman (not of man) • from Elohim => virgin birth) Beg. The Seed: Enmity Recorded Patriarchal Period Prophecies of Enoch (Jude 14 -15) • Diff. between ungodly (Satan’s seed) and the godly (seed of woman). • Lord “has come” w/ His myriad of holy ones to judge, convict the ungodly • Eternal darkness The Seed: Position Job 16: 19 -21 – my testifier, my vouching witness is on high Job 19: 25 -27 – “I know…” • Personal rescuer, vindicator, debt-payer lives eternally • He will stand upon the earth at a later time • I will see God with my own eyes “without this flesh” The Seed: Ancestry Chosen Covenant & Promises to Abraham: in thy seed shall ALL the nations be blessed Gen 22: 18 => Is. 65: 16 => Gal 3: 16 • Distinguish between physical land-nation promises and spiritual ‘seed’ blessing promise. The Seed: Tribe Identified Judah through whom the seed would come (Gen 49) ~2500 -2000 BC

The Seed of Woman: the Ancestry-lineage Chosen • Shemitic line (Shem to Abraham) is selected as a result of the blessing/curse of Noah upon Shem and Ham, respectively. Gen 9: 25 -27; 11: 10 ff • Yahweh sets Abram apart from his country, kinsmen, his father’s house; a special purpose; two kinds of promises made: • From him a great nation will be made; possession of the land promised (physical); Gen 12: 1 ff; 13: 14 ff; 15: 18; 17: 1 -8; covenant of circumcision • In him all the families/nations/peoples of the earth shall be blessed (spiritual) • Covenant of circumcision; Gen 17: 9 • Covenant for the seed of Isaac - Gen 17: 19 “I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his seed after him. ”; 17: 21 – “But my covenant will I establish with Isaac…” Gen 22: 17 ff promises repeated • Gen 22: 18 "And in your seed (singular, Gal 3: 16) all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice. " (Heb 11: 8 ff); Heb 11: 9 Isaac/Jacob “fellow heirs of same promise”

The Seed of Woman: the Ancestry-lineage Chosen; God at Work • Isaac m. Rebekah

The Seed of Woman: the Ancestry-lineage Chosen; God at Work • Isaac m. Rebekah – Gen 25: 23 two nations within Rebekah • Elder shall serve the younger (Esau and Jacob); Gen 25: 27 ff birthright sold; Gen 27 Isaac’s blessing rests upon Jacob. • Gen 28: Jacob sent to take a wife from Rebekah’s family (brother); Esau took 2 wives of the Hittites and 1 from Ishmaelites in spite of his father (Gen 26: 34; 27: 46; 28: 8 ff). • Gen 33: 15 => 35: 1 Esau to Seir and Jacob to Beth-el (at God’s direction) • 36: 1 Esau => Edom; Edom becomes the metaphor for the world, the seed of Satan (same for Moabites, from Lot’s incest w/ daughters). • Throughout Genesis and all scripture, while the seed of woman as a line of descendants develops and unfolds, the history recorded is that of the enmity between the woman’s seed and Satan’s seed. • All conflict recorded in scripture is ultimately an expression of that enmity as Satan worked to defeat the seed-lineage one generation at a time; either through temptation of each generation of the seed-line or • Influencing his (Satan’s) seed to harm/defeat the seed-line of woman.

The Seed of Woman: The Tribe Identified • Prophecy of Jacob/Israel; Gen 49 •

The Seed of Woman: The Tribe Identified • Prophecy of Jacob/Israel; Gen 49 • Reuben, Simeon, Levi committed grievous acts of immorality (Reuben) or violence (Simeon, Levi); the latter two were divided and scattered within Israel (49: 7) 49: 8 -10 Judah identified as lineage: • Gen 49: 8 "Judah, your brothers shall praise you; Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; Your father's sons shall bow down to you. 9 "Judah is a lion's whelp; From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He couches, he lies down as a lion, And as a lion, who dares rouse him up? 10 "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh [he to whom the scepter belongs] comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. 11 "He ties his foal to the vine, And his donkey's colt to the choice vine; He washes his garments in wine, And his robes in the blood of grapes. • YLT Gen 49: 10 The scepter turneth not aside from Judah, And a lawgiver from between his feet, Till his Seed come; And his (the seed) is the obedience of peoples. [interpretation more than translation]

The Seed of Woman: The Tribe Identified / Described – Gen 49: 8 -10

The Seed of Woman: The Tribe Identified / Described – Gen 49: 8 -10 • Judah, like a maturing lion, would be a powerful tribe, lineage; leader in war (courage), conquering (resolute), and judging (wisdom). [notes below] • Jacob’s prophecy looked beyond Judah to David to Jesus in reaching fulfillment (Rev 5: 5); to a time when physical would give way to spiritual • Judah would retain physical authority and leadership/rulership until a certain time [when it would continue as spiritual authority/rulership]; • Primary fulfillment in David (physical); I Chron 5: 1 -2 • Ultimate, complete fulfillment in the Messiah (spiritual); Rev 5: 5 • Jacob speaks of the physical and the spiritual to come; of the lineage (David) and a specific descendant of Judah; “Until Shiloh comes, to him to whom it (scepter) rightfully belongs [Heb vowels; alt. reading], to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. ” • Ps 72: 8, 11 dominion from sea to sea; all kings shall fall down before him; all nations (peoples) shall serve him. [not fulfilled in David] • Jacob speaks of Shiloh before enslavement in Egypt, ~450 -500 years before exodus and entry into Canaan; Shiloh/city was 500 years in the future when Jacob spoke. If this refers to the city…

The Seed of Woman: Judah – David – Messiah [Shiloh] – Gen 49: 8

The Seed of Woman: Judah – David – Messiah [Shiloh] – Gen 49: 8 -10 • Upon entering Canaan Israel assembled at Shiloh, set up the tent of meeting (Josh 18: 1), the house of God (Judg 18: 31); land divided by lot before the Lord there (Josh 18: 10 ff); rallying point of tribes for war (Josh 22: 12); feast of the Lord there (Judg 21: 19); the ark of the covenant rested there (I Sam 4: 3 -4); Eli and priests resided there (I Sam 1: 3, 12; 2: 14); Samuel brought/raised there (I Sam 1: 24); the Lord appeared, revealed Himself to Samuel (I Sam 3: 21); important prophet resided there (I Ki 14: 2) • Shiloh was the sole, central spiritual place to which the people gathered to present themselves before Yahweh (through priests); it was where Yahweh appeared and spoke; where the ark/Yahweh resided, where people sacrificed to receive annual atonement; where Yahweh ‘was’ and where He spoke. Shiloh means, ‘ruler’ or ‘belonging to’. • As the place between the wings of the cherubim on the covering of the ark was where God would meet the high priest once/year, Shiloh was the place where God’s priest would mediate for the people; it was the meeting point between God and His people. [covering = Gk. hilesterion = propitation]; that meeting point between Yahweh and man is now the Messiah (Heb 9).

Archaeologists now have found evidence that after Shilo was destroyed and Jews returned, they sacrificed even during the First Temple period. By: Tzvi Ben. Gedalyahu Published: November 20 th, 2013 A dramatic discovery at the ancient site of Shiloh, located in Samaria, provides the first–ever evidence that it continued to be a religious center after it was destroyed by the Philistines and Jews returned to the city, home of the Tabernacle. The altar is thought to have been used to offer sacrifices even after the First Temple was built in Jerusalem.

The Seed of Woman: Judah – David – Messiah [Shiloh] – Gen 49: 8

The Seed of Woman: Judah – David – Messiah [Shiloh] – Gen 49: 8 -10 • “Until Shiloh [he to whom the scepter belongs] comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. ” • This prophecy by Jacob would become clearer with time as God would speak through other prophets; Messiah to be a gathering point for His people (Isa 11: 10); He would be given as a covenant (Is 42: 6; 49: 8); to Him would belong all dominions, powers, etc. • See Rev 19: 11 -16 • He determines the ‘lot’ or ‘portion’ (eternal inheritance) today according to obedience • Jacob’s prophecy began with Judah’s personal / physical preeminence among his brothers; the supremacy of the tribe above others • It proceeds to David, first bearer of the scepter as king of Israel, from the tribe of Judah • Ultimate fulfillment is in the lion of Judah, the root of David, (Rev 5: 5) • The seed of the woman through the seed/lineage of the patriarchs would continue through Judah unto David unto the Messiah.
