Ezekiel 593 -570 BC Ezekiel is unique among prophets in several ways: • Ezekiel was taken to Babylon when Nebuchadnezzar carried ten thousand of Judah’s most valued citizens captive (II Kings 24: 24 ff; Jer 24: 1) • Jer 24 explains much about Ezekiel’s role before the captivity (597586 BC); vision of two baskets of figs, one rotten, one good; the good symbolized those being carried to Babylon who would be preserved as the remnant; • Ezekiel’s mission would be to prepare the group of captives for the fall of Jerusalem and preserve their faith in Yahweh despite all that they would experience • Ezekiel employs methods of teaching using symbols and symbolic acts; difficult to interpret w/o using other prophets & the NT Jeremiah 627 -586 660 Zephaniah 630 -625 Habakkuk Daniel 605 - 536 625 -605 Ezekiel 593 -570 586

Ezekiel 593 -570 BC • Ezekiel wrote shortly before, during, and after the fall of Jerusalem, as a captive in Babylon from ~598 -570 BC • Therefore the five visions are significant in that during the darkest period of the nation’s history, he delivers God’s word that the captives will return, temple worship in a lesser form will be restored, and the messiah will come from among the descendants of the captivity 1. Ezekiel 593 -570 BC • It is critical to note that the Babylonian Captivity and the prophecies of Jeremiah and Ezekiel speak to the end of the physical kingdom of Judah and the Davidic line [Jer 3: 15 -18] Jer 22: 29 -30 O earth, hear the word of the LORD. Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man (Coniah/Jehoiakim) childless…for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah. • Babylonian destruction of Judah ended physical Davidic royal line ( physical throne ) • Mt 24 (Jesus’ prophecies) and AD 70 ended the Jewish ‘nation’ & Law for all time.

Ezekiel 16: 60 -63 Everlasting Covenant & Forgiveness • Ezek 16 recounts the history of Israel both in terms of their beginnings and the spiritual adultery that came to characterize her; more corrupt than Samaria and Sodom (v. 47)!! Surrounding nations appeared ‘righteous’. • Yet in spite of this, Yahweh reveals His character and what He will do Eze 16: 60 -63 "Nevertheless, I will remember My covenant with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you…Thus I will establish My covenant with you, and you shall know that I am the LORD, in order that you may remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth anymore because of your humiliation, when I have forgiven you for all that you have done, " the Lord GOD declares. • Hos 2: 18; Isa 55: 3; Jer 32: 40 – an everlasting covenant • How will this be accomplished with Judah captive? 660 Zephaniah 630 -625 Jeremiah 627 -586 Habakkuk Daniel 605 - 536 625 -605 Ezekiel 593 -570 586

Ezekiel 17: 22 -24 The King of Yahweh’s Planting Eze 17: 22 -24 Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I will also take of the lofty top of the cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I will plant it upon a high and lofty mountain: in the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it; and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all birds of every wing; in the shade of the branches thereof shall they dwell. And all the trees of the field shall know that I, Jehovah, have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I, Yahweh, have spoken and have done it. Ezekiel 16 (Everlasting Covenant) + 17 (King of God’s Planting) 20 • The fulfillment of this prophecy (Ezek 17) would exert a worldwide influence, “and all the trees of the field shall know that I, Yahweh, have brought down the high tree… • The bringing forth of the Messiah from the dry ground (spiritual void) of Israel, from the stump of the fallen house of David, should cause all men to know that Yahweh rules kingdoms and gives dominion to whom He chooses (Dan 4: 17) • From 16: 60 -63 and 17: 22 -24 Ezekiel foretold the coming of one, new kind of king and one, new covenant, both by and from the power of Yahweh • Ez 20 foretold the restoration of Israel following harsh judgments (which lay ahead); restoration to the land was necessary to have a place to bring forth the ‘twig’ and a place to gather the remnant; these two purposes summarize the need and purpose for the location; beyond this, there is no emphasis or mention of the importance of the land itself. Ezekiel 20: 40 -44 Restoration to the Land (1 st remnant) Before/As Judah Is being led into captivity [they will return] Eze 20: 40 -41 For in my holy mountain, in the mountain of the height of Israel, saith the Lord Jehovah, there shall the house of Israel, all of them, serve me in the land: there will I accept them, and there will I require your offerings, and the first-fruits of your oblations, with all your holy things. As a sweet savor will I accept you, when I bring you out from the peoples, and gather you out of the countries wherein ye have been scattered; and I will be sanctified in you in the sight of the nations. Ezekiel 21: 24 -27 End of Judah; overturning of the order; rightful king • 21 foretells the end of Zedekiah and the expectation of the Messiah before the capture of captivity Eze 21: 24 -27 Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Because ye have made your iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are uncovered, so that in all your doings your sins do appear; because that ye are come to remembrance, ye shall be taken with the hand. And thou, O deadly wounded wicked one, the prince of Israel, whose day is come, in the time of the iniquity of the end, thus saith the Lord Jehovah: Remove the [priestly] turban, and take off the crown; this shall be no more the same; exalt that which is low, and abase that which is high. Ezekiel 34 – Judgment Against False Shepherds & One True Shepherd • vv. 1 -10 spiritual leaders (prophets, priests, kings) responsible for misleading the people and for the captivity • 13 x in this chapter Yahweh uses the expression “My sheep”. The Lord’s sheep have always been entrusted temporarily to the care of pastors/overseers in some form (patriarchs, prophets, judges, priests, kings); un-true/faithless ‘shepherds’ stood indicted/convicted. • the spiritually lame and sick had been neglected, ruled by force and exploitation, becoming food for the wild beasts; the language is figurative to express the physical reality. Purpose is to provide the strong contrast for the description of the true shepherd to come. • vv. 11 -19 Yahweh would be their shepherd; monarchy, priests, prophets had been removed; Yahweh would shepherd His sheep until the coming of the Messiah [v. 15 & see Hos 2: 18 ff], the one, true shepherd of Yahweh’s sheep. Ezekiel 34 : 20 -31 True Shepherd/king in the future Eze 34: 23 -25 And I will raise up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. And I, Jehovah, will be their God, and my servant David prince among them; I, Jehovah, have spoken it. And I will make with them a covenant of peace [Hos 3: 5; Isa 55: 3 -5; Jer 23: 5; 30: 9; 33 -15 -22 => Jn 10: 1118; Heb 13: 20; 1 Pet 2: 25; 5: 4] • The Messiah/Anointed One is identified as Yahweh’s one shepherd of Yahweh’s sheep; He would feed and pasture (safety) the Lord’s sheep • He would be the Chief Shepherd and overseer of your souls (1 Pet 2: 25) • The covenant of peace (removing the iniquity between God and man) is that blood of the Chief Shepherd offered for His sheep [Heb 13: 20 -21] • Security is conveyed in the language of “covenant of peace”; vv 26 -31 convey spiritual security and assuredness [cannot be plucked up or devoured as long as we “hear His voice”] • The ‘land’ of vv 27, 29 was the ‘pasture’ of His sheep, those that accept, and follow (obey) Him [heed His voice]

Ezekiel 34 : 20 -31 Yahweh Raises Up and Sets His Will Eze 34: 23 -25 And I will raise up one shepherd over them, and he shall feed them, even my servant David; he shall feed them, and he shall be their shepherd. And I, Jehovah, will be their God, and my servant David prince among them; I, Jehovah, have spoken it. And I will make with them a covenant of peace [Hos 3: 5; Isa 55: 3 -5; Jer 23: 5; 30: 9; 33 -15 -22 => Jn 10: 1118; Heb 13: 20; 1 Pet 2: 25; 5: 4] • Note that Yahweh specifically states, “I will raise up…” • Dt 18: 15 the promise to “raise up…a prophet” like unto Moses • I Sam 2: 35 - And I will raise Me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in My heart and in My mind: and I will build Him a sure house; and He shall walk before Mine anointed for ever. • Psa 2: 6 Yet I have set my king Upon my holy hill of Zion. • Amo 9: 11 In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; • Jer 30: 9 but they shall serve Jehovah their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them.

Ezekiel 37: of David the Messiah Three divisions of Ch. 37 vv. 1 -14 Vision of the valley of dry bones vv. 15 -23 Two Scepters/sticks joined - Bringing Israel-Judah together as one vv. 24 -28 Reign of David the true shepherd/king forever Valley of Dry Bones • Reviving work of Yahweh (v. 5); it is in response to God’s Word that spiritual (and eternal) life returns to the spiritual dead • Yahweh explains this vision (v. 11); the message is that the Word of God gives life; is spiritually restorative so that He may put His Spirit in His people [Joel 2 => Acts 2] Two Kingdoms united as one • The two sticks/scepters are joined in one hand, the hand of Yahweh; the people would return from captivity and Yahweh would shepherd (care) them (v. 15) until David the Messiah came (34: 23), and Yahweh would be their king (v. 22) until the Messiah would be enthroned (v. 24)

Ezekiel 37: of David the Messiah vv. 24 -27 David, Yahweh’s Messiah / King • Note ‘and” in v. 27 to conjoin and continue thought after the kingdoms are united; “and my servant David shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd and they shall walk in mine ordinances and observe my statutes and do them. ” • The meaning in Hebrew of prince or king is lit. “one who is raised up” or “one who has been lifted up”. Context determines the nature of the lifting up or kingship. • 37: 26 -28 Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them…and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. • Not a local place or geographic place of worship or divine dwelling (He is in the ‘midst’ of His people; II Cor 6: 16 “we are a temple…” Paul quoting Ezekiel • Ezek 38 &39 point to the ultimate destruction of all anit-God forces looking to the end of the Messianic dispensation – Rev 20: 7 -8
