Zephaniah • Estimated time of Zephaniah’s prophecies is ~625 BC • Great-grandson of Hezekiah (1. 1) • Reference to Jerusalem as “this place” [1: 4] and its condition [3: 1] suggests it was his home • Zephaniah gives emphasis to the day of Yahweh; it is at hand (1: 7], near [1: 14], a day of darkness and terror [1: 15 -16], is judgment against sin [1: 17] • Judgment against the world, Judah, sinners of every rank, imminent, terrible, upon all nations surrounding Judah; woes upon Judah; • A remnant shall be spared (3: 9 -20); from among the heathen (3: 9 -10) and from a cleansed Israel (3: 11 -13) Reign of Josiah -------------------------------------------------625 - Year beginning Jeremiah’s ministry 640 630 620 609

Zephaniah • 1: 2 -6 Yahweh declares a world judgment; Jerusalem & Judah, idolaters, idols, priests, false-swearers, apostates • The “Chemarim”of v. 4 were idolatrous priests of the baalim and high places (II Kings 23: 5); in v. 5 two kinds will be judged, star worshipers and the false-swearers. • Those that worshipped “the host of heavens” (forbidden - Deut 4: 19), on their rooftops, altars/incense etc. , and • Those that swear to Yahweh and to Malcam (one of the baals) • They still ‘worshipped’ Yahweh but had added unauthorized objects and elements to the worship; their worship/attention/devotion was divided; anything receiving our spiritual, soul-ful devotion other than God is idolatry. Zephaniah • 1: 7 ‘day of the Lord’ refers to a kind of judgment against the wicked • Immediate context indicates what kind/length of judgment • 1: 8 rulers and royalty are held responsible for the moral and social conditions in Jerusalem, those who are clothed “with foreign apparel”, the wealthy and social elite • By their attire they affiliate w/ Egypt or Babylonia and the ways of the pagan peoples (similar to what “liberal western culture” means today) • The leaders had forsaken the customs, beliefs of the divinelyappointed kingdom and adopted the ways of the pagan. • 1: 13 they had ignored God and lived in the lusts of their depraved hearts; for this God demonstrated His divine power in removing their wealth and giving it as spoil to others Reign of Josiah ------------------------------------------------- 640 630 620 609 625 - Year beginning Jeremiah’s ministry

Zephaniah • Ch 2 is Yahweh’s call to repentance and judgment against nations around Judah • Ch 3 Zephaniah turns again to Jerusalem to warn her since she has acted as the nations around her; the difference is that Jerusalem may be helped if her people will fear Yahweh and turn • Four charges are leveled against “the rebellious city”: [3: 2] • “she obeyed not the voice” of Yahweh [disobedient] • “she received not correction” [impenitent, shameless] • “she trusted not in Yahweh” [faithless] • “she drew not near to her God” [apostate] • Four classes in Jerusalem are exposed for their guilt and judged: (1) “her princes” (2) her judges” (3) “her prophets” (4) “her priests” Reign of Josiah ------------------------------------------------- 640 630 620 609 625 - Year beginning Jeremiah’s ministry

Zephaniah • 3: 8 marks the turning point in the prophecy; Yahweh declares “therefore wait for me”; a call to the pious few who seek Him (2: 3) • The exhortation “to wait for Yahweh” is a favorite w/ Isaiah, and his explanations are the best: Is 40: 31; 42: 4; 49: 23: 64: 4. • To wait for Yahweh is to put one’s trust completely in Him, not despairing but allowing God to work His Will in the present and future though one may not discern what His purpose is; this is the essence of trust (faith) [ pisteuw = pisteuo ] • 3: 9 -13 Of those who wait upon the Lord Yahweh promised to turn to Himself a people of purified lip (language) and dedicated heart • Zeph 3: 9 For then will I turn to the peoples of a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of Jehovah, to serve him with one consent. Zephaniah 3 – Messianic Hope, a pure people • The lips of a people who had profaned themselves and their language would be purified so that they might call in unison on Yahweh (Isa 6: 5, 7; Jer 1: 9; Dan 10: 16 [characteristic of the redeemed remnant] • The “in unison” or “one consent” is literally ‘one shoulder’, meaning with one yoke or even shoulders bearing a burden. • To serve [shekhem] with one ['echa d] shoulder, is to serve together or with unanimity, with one-ness. • The metaphor is taken from bearers who carry a burden with even shoulders; cf. Jer 32: 39. • Echad [not yacheed - 1] is used of God, and of marriage (one flesh, Mt 19) • Yahweh elohinu, Yahweh echad [shema] • Yahweh is (our) Elohim [pl], Yahweh is one! Zephaniah 3 – Messianic Hope Zep 3: 16 -17, 19 -20 In that day it will be said to Jerusalem: "Do not be afraid, O Zion; Do not let your hands fall limp. "The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. Habakkuk (embrace) • Habakkuk appeals to God on behalf of the righteous; poignant and perplexing questions are raised to God as to why evil is allowed, why is an evil nation (Chaldea) being used to judge Judah • Habakkuk notes that God has always come to the aid of the faithful, and that His judgments are for (1) the salvation of His people, (2) the punishment of the wicked, and (3) for His name’s sake • patience with longsufferingness will only tolerate evil to a point that holiness, justness and righteousness temper = a principle of divine discipline; there is a point to which evil attains that justness requires punishment/judgment; • The patience and longsufferingness of God is what we are seeing when we cry, “How long O Lord? ” Ezekiel 612 Daniel 606

Habakkuk (embrace) • Hab 1: 5 Behold ye among the nations, and look, and wonder marvellously; for I am working a work in your days, which ye will not believe though it be told you. • Acts 13: 38 -41 quoted by Paul in the synagogue of Pisidia Antioch • God answers Habakkuk and tells him that He sees the evil and He is working to judge it; “…behold, I raise up the Chaldeans…” 1: 6 • God raised up the Chaldean (Neo-Babylonian) empire to judge/punish the evil of Judah, and to preserve the faithful • Paul quoting this text to the Jews in the synagogue would have been taken as a judgment text, that they were to respond to the sermon he had just preached of the great working of God to save and preserve, or they would be judged as evil (faithless) Ezekiel 612 Daniel 606

Habakkuk (embrace) • Hab 2: 2 -4 And Jehovah answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tablets, that he may run (deliver) that readeth it. For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hasteth toward the end, and shall not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not delay…. but the righteous shall live by his faith. • God answers Habakkuk requiring he record the revelation in a manner easily delivered. An appointed time is a definite fixed time in the mind of God; it “panteth” [Heb. ] toward the end (runs toward fulfillment) • For man, it may seem to ‘tarry’ but man is to be patient and wait; its coming is certain, therefore…. • The righteous live by faith / trust in the Lord regardless of catastrophes; incl. the downfall and capture of one’s nation • Gen 15: 6 (Abraham) Heb 11; Rom 1: 16 -17; 3: 21 -22; 5: 1 -2; Gal 3: 11 612 Ezekiel Daniel 606

Habakkuk (embrace) • Most of Hab. 2 addresses the evil of the Chaldeans, what they did, how they lived, and what will happen to them • When Habakkuk wrote the vision/revelation, God’s people were under the threat of destruction by the Chaldeans; when the writer of Hebrews letter wrote, the people were under threat of destruction by Rome as foretold by Christ (Mt 24). • In this parallel we see Hab 2: 4 and Heb 10: 37 -39 more clearly • Hab 2: 14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of Jehovah, as the waters cover the sea. [Psa 72: 19; Isa 11: 9] • Despite the destruction of the Chaldean to come and the evil of Judah, Hab 2: 20 reassures, “But Jehovah is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him. “ • How is this possible when the temple was destroyed in 586 B. Habakkuk (embrace) • Habakkuk realizes that Judah/Jerusalem must be punished, as God will use the Chaldeans, and then punish them for their evil (as evil consumes evil, serving the purposes of God) • Hab 3: 13 Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, For the salvation of thine anointed; • In all of God’s doings there is purpose; God is working His purpose in the prophet’s present as He had done throughout the previous history (which is why Hab. reviews the activity of God w/ His people) • The last several phrases of Habakkuk reflect the deep sorrow and the great faith of this prophet; He must wait for the destruction of everything necessary for survival • Yet in all of this, he will exult / rejoice in the Lord 612 Ezekiel Daniel 606

Habakkuk (embrace) • Hab 3: 16 -17 I heard and my inward parts trembled, At the sound my lips quivered. Decay enters my bones, And in my place I tremble. Because I must wait quietly for the day of distress, For the people to arise who will invade us. Jeremiah – Historical Background • 612 BC Chaldean (Neo-Babylonian) army destroyed Nineveh and pursued Assyrians for 3 yrs. as far as Carchemish. Pharaoh Necho attempted to aid the Assyrians (as Chaldean army neared Egypt via Judah) but King Josiah intervened to delay Necho at Megiddo (609 BC) and Josiah died there (II Kings 23; II Chron 35; note vv. 21 -22 – Josiah interferes w/ God’s use of Neco) • 2 Ch 35: 25 Then Jeremiah chanted a lament for Josiah. And all the male and female singers speak about Josiah in their lamentations to this day. • Necho made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the place of Josiah his father, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. Jeremiah Jer 3: 15 -18 Then I will give you shepherds after My own heart, who will feed you on knowledge and understanding. And it shall be in those days when you are multiplied and increased in the land, declares the LORD, they shall say no more, 'The ark of the covenant of the LORD. ' And it shall not come to mind, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they miss it, nor shall it be made again. At that time they shall call Jerusalem 'The Throne of the LORD, ' and all the nations will be gathered to it, to Jerusalem, for the name of the LORD; nor shall they walk anymore after the stubbornness of their evil heart. In those days the house of Judah will walk with the house of Israel, and they will come together from the land of the north to the land that I gave your fathers as an inheritance. • ‘those days’ will be a qualitatively different dispensation and relationship w/ God; the ark will have no role • therefore, the high priest and temple will have no role! Jeremiah Jer 3: 18 …In those days the house of Judah will walk with the house of Israel, and they will come together from the land of the north to the land that I gave your fathers as an inheritance. • vv. 15 -17 CONTEXT: “I will bring you to Zion…it (the ark) shall not come to mind… Jerusalem shall be called the throne of the Lord, and all nations shall gather to it to the presence of the Lord in Jerusalem. ” • The land “I gave to your fathers”, like the promise to Abraham, was to be looked beyond => Heb 11: 8 -10 • Heb 11: 8 -10 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going…dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the same promise…for he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. • For us today: Heb 13: 13 -14 Hence, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach. Isaiah – Selections Isa 65: 9 And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains; and my chosen shall inherit it, and my servants shall dwell there. Isaiah 65 is a graphic, detailed, violent description of Divine Just recompense against apostates/disobedient; lengthy indictment, and lengthy ‘sentencing’/judgment. Salvation of a remnant (v. 8 -12) and destruction of the faithless sums up Is. 65. Isa 65: 17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. καινὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ καινή, = kainos = a qualitatively different kind where the latter is superior to the former. • 2 Co 5: 17 ὥστε εἴ τις ε ν Χριστω , καινη κτι σις·= a superior formation, a creature superior in kind/quality to what was before (in this case, immersion in Christ)

Satan) shall be defeated/conquered, and rendered w/o power.
