Sennacherib’s prism notable for describing Sennacherib’s siege of Jerusalem during the reign of king Hezekiah and receiving tribute from him. The invasion is mentioned by Herodotus who records that the invasion ended at Pelusium on the edge of the Nile delta. Created during the reign of Sennacherib in 689 BC (Chicago Museum) or 691 BC (London, Jerusalem). Sennacherib did not record the loss of 185, 000 men at Jerusalem…without a battle.

Isa 12 – rejoicing of the remnant Isaiah 12: 1 …on that day, "I will give thanks to Thee, O LORD; For although Thou wast angry with me, Thine anger is turned away… reconciliation Isaiah 12 foretells 6 imperatives characterizing the reconciled remnant: 1. They/We will give thanks to Yahweh [prayer, song, thanksgiving] 2. They/We will call upon His name[obedience / worship] 3. They/We will declare His doings among the peoples/nations [preaching] 4. They/We as Zion’s inhabitants will cry aloud and shout (Heb 12: 22; Rev 14: 7) For great in the midst of thee is the Holy One of Israel (vv. 4 -6). • This is directed to every individual ever redeemed by the Messiah! As foretold ~750 yrs before Christ/Pentecost; >2, 760 yrs ago for us!

Isa 28: 16 -17 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed. And I will make justice the measuring line, And righteousness the level; [I Pet 2: 6; Rom 9: 33; 10: 11] Isa 35 …Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. Then the lame will leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb will shout for joy. For waters will break forth in the wilderness…And the glowing sand [mirage] will become a pool, And the thirsty ground springs of water…And a highway will be there, a roadway, And it will be called the Highway of Holiness. I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the nations. "He will not cry out or raise His voice, Nor make His voice heard in the street. "A bruised reed He will not break, And a dimly burning wick He will not extinguish; He will faithfully bring forth justice. Isa 49 – My Servant, the Light to the World [Ch. 42, 49, 50, 52, 53] Isa 49: 1 -6 Listen to Me, O islands, And pay attention, you peoples from afar. The LORD called Me from the womb; From the body of My mother He named Me. And He has made My mouth like a sharp sword; In the shadow of His hand He has concealed Me, And He has also made Me a select arrow; He has hidden Me in His quiver. And He said to Me, "You are My Servant, Israel, In Whom I will show My glory. " But I said, "I have toiled in vain, I have spent My strength for nothing and vanity; Yet surely the justice due to Me is with the LORD, And My reward with My God. " And now says the LORD, who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, To bring Jacob back to Him, in order that Israel might be gathered to Him (For I am honored in the sight of the LORD, And My God is My strength), He says, "It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also make You a light of the nations So that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth. "

Isa 49 – My Servant, the Light to the World [Ch. 42, 49, 50, 52, 53] Isa 49: 7 -9 Thus saith Jehovah, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise; princes, and they shall worship; because of Jehovah that is faithful, even the Holy One of Israel, who hath chosen thee. Thus saith Jehovah, In an acceptable time have I answered thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee [II Cor 6: 2]; and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to raise up the land, to make them inherit the desolate heritages: saying to them that are bound, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and on all bare heights shall be their pasture. Isa 49: 22 ff Thus saith the Lord Jehovah, Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations, and set up my ensign to the peoples; … 25 But thus saith Jehovah, Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered; for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

Isa 50 – My Servant, Submission/Obedience [Ch. 42, 49, 50, 52, 53] Isa 50: 4 -7 The Lord GOD has given Me the tongue of disciples, That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple. The Lord GOD has opened My ear [Ps 40: 6]; And I was not disobedient, Nor did I turn back. I gave My back to those who strike Me, And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting. For the Lord GOD helps Me, Therefore, I am not disgraced; Therefore, I have set My face like flint (Lk 9: 51), And I know that I shall not be ashamed. • To spit upon one was an act of ritual, deliberate defilement and contempt [Lev 15: 8; Num 12: 14; Deut 25: 9] • The Obedient/Submissive Servant did not hide his face from severe humiliation and defilement by His enemies. [note Jn 12: 41]

Isa 52 – My Servant, Suffering Redeemer [Ch. 42, 49, 50, 52, 53] Isa 52: 6 -9 Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak; behold, it is I. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace, that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation, that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! The voice of thy watchmen! they lift up the voice, together do they sing; for they shall see eye to eye, when Jehovah returneth to Zion. Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem; for Jehovah hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. • Rom 10: 14 -17 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things! But they did not all hearken to the glad tidings. For Isaiah saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

Isa 52 – My Servant, Suffering Redeemer [Ch. 42, 49, 50, 52, 53] Isa 52: 13 -14 Behold, my servant shall deal wisely, he shall be exalted and lifted up, and shall be very high. Like as many were astonished at thee (his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men), • Emphasis is on the disfigurement and suffering • In contempt people turned away in disgust; this was contrary to what they were looking for in the Messiah • This passage, along with 53: 2 do not reference the facial features or stature of the Messiah, but speak to the suffering, humiliation, and shame to which he was subjected, and the effect on those who observed • Leads to the ‘acquainted with grief’ of 53: 1 -3

Isa 53 – My Suffering Servant [Ch. 42, 49, 50, 52, 53] ASV Isa 53: 1 -7 Who hath believed our message? and to whom hath the arm of Jehovah been revealed? For he grew up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised, and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and as one from whom men hide their face he was despised; and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised [pierced] for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and Jehovah hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he opened not his mouth; as a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. • Jn 12: 37 -41; Rom 10: 16 -21; Mt 8: 17; 1 Pet 2: 24; Heb 9: 28

Isa 53 – My Suffering Servant [Ch. 42, 49, 50, 52, 53] ASV Isa 53: 5 -6 …But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised [pierced] for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; • The word “iniquities” is derived from the verb (Heb) meaning to bend, twist, distort; • Iniquities are perversions, or violations/transgressions by distorting and perverting truth by however means (rationalization) people use • Thus the word selection following…that like sheep we have gone astray (wandered off dumbly) and we have deliberately chosen to turn (away) from His way to our own way. • This is distortion, perversion of what is right; for this, He was pierced and wounded.

Isa 53 – My Suffering Servant [Ch. 42, 49, 50, 52, 53] Isa 53: 8 -12 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who among them considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due? And they made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death; although he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased Jehovah to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of Jehovah shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by the knowledge of himself shall my righteous servant justify many; and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors: yet he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. • Mt 27: 1 -14; Lk 23: 9; all references in NT to the Lamb of God spring from this passage; cut off = verbiage here is violent, a ripping away.
