What happens during these meetings? • What are some of the dynamics that you see/ experience while facilitating a group? • What stands out most in your mind as you reflect on past sessions?
From your past experiences, what stands out most for you during your sessions when you have facilitated people or groups? • • • What has worked Were people engaged Were people confused What was easy What was difficult
What would you like to change about these meetings? • • What would do differently next time What questions did this raise for you What concerns do you have What do you wish you knew
What does this mean about future sessions? • How will you do it next time • What would you like the results to be • What are some of your nonnegotiable musts
How do you close your sessions? • • Where do we go from here Who will do What and By what date
Rules for a Safe Environment • • • One person speaks at a time No criticism, be open minded What is said here, stays here Make comments using “I” statements If you don’t understand – ask
TOP – Focused Conversation • Provides a structure for clear dialogue and reflection • Probes beneath the surface to the depth of a topic • Encourages a diversity of perspectives • Allows members of a group to share these diverse perspectives in a nonconfrontational manner • Share insights and broadens perspective
O R I D – A System Why are we having this conversation? Rational Aim? (Content) Experiential Aim (Tone, Feel, Mood) Process: O – Objective R – Reflective I - Interpretive D - Decisional
What do I do before any meeting? What is your Rational Aim? The intent or practical goal of the conversation What is the Experiential Aim? The inner impact and the overall experience of the conversation on the group
O R I D Objective: Reflective: Interpretive: Decisional: What Gut Now What So what Sense Heart Head Action
Objective Ask questions so that everyone hears the same details and nothing is left to assumption. Begin with data, facts, external reality. • • • What did you see What did you hear How did it taste What did it smell like What did you do
Reflective What was your reaction? Evoke immediate personal reactions, internal responses, sometimes emotions or feelings, hidden images, and associations with the facts. • • • How did you feel What was most exciting What surprised you What excited you What was difficult Ask questions that speak to emotions
Interpretive So what? What will you do with this information? Draw out meaning values, significance, implications. • • • What else do we need to consider What is most important to you What other things do we need to consider What kind of changes will we need to make What differences will it make • What new insights did you get from this?
Decisional Bring the conversation to a close, eliciting resolution and enabling the group to make a dicision about the future. • What does it mean to have experienced this • What is the resolve of this group • What have you learned • What is the first thing you will do next How will tomorrow be different Craig and Shannon said “Was this helpful? ”
Why do this? So that everyone in the room moves through the process together. You do not move from one step to another until and unless you believe that everyone has been heard and has stated their piece.
Example with Edi Let’s talk about her YURT! See if you tell when I transition from: Objective to Reflective to Interpretive Decisional Closing
How can this be applied to… • The topics we discuss. . • • Client On-Boarding Apps that we like and heard of Geni’s Ignite presentation Chris’ Portkey exercise Edi’s TEDX talk? Jeff’s discussion about interviewing Craig and Shannon’s On-Boarding Steve’s corner
Conclusion Talk to me… Was this helpful? How so? What will you do with this?
