Grading: Elementary School ● Standards-based grading: There is a “standard” which shows what students should know and be able to do ○ Student is: • 3= “at standard”, • 2=“approaching standard” • 1 =“below standard” Standard Students that receive a 1 are not usually asked to repeat a grade. • Celebrate the 3’s 4=“above standard”

Types of Assessment (testing) District tests ● pre-assessments (before unit) ● unit assessments (after unit) ● some are paper-and-pencil, some are one-on-one with the teacher (reading) State/National tests in the spring: ● Grade 3 -5: SBA - Smarter Balanced Assessment - computer test ● Grade 5 - Science MSP (Measure of Student Progress)
7. ELL (English Language Learner)Program ● ELPA 21 Test in February/March ● Classroom Teacher ○ - all the time ● ELL teacher or Educational Assistant teaches ○ - a few days a week ○ -20 -30 minutes On Report card teacher might write – “ELP”.
8. Homework ● Packet of work or individual piece of paper ● Daily or weekly ● Not graded. It’s for practice ● K-2 nd grade: 10 -20 minutes. ● 3 rd-5 th grade: 30 -45 minutes

Supporting your child at home • Provide a quiet place and time for homework • Check your child’s backpack daily • Talk to your child about their assignments. • Be aware of what you child is watching on TV/games, as it can affect social interactions at school. • Help your child with friendship skills when playing with friends.

Supporting your child at home • Encourage speaking, reading and writing in your first language • Provide books at home (talk to the teacher about your child’s reading level and book suggestions). • Read to your child 20 minutes a day (home language or English). Some teachers might have a reading log.

14. New Attendance Law ● The district has to schedule a conference with you, if your child has: ○ 2 unexcused absences in one month ○ 5 excused absences in any month, or ten or more in a year • unless you have a doctor’s note or it’s pre-arranged ● Communicate with the school about absences
