Come and See… Jesus, you call to our hearts once more: ‘Leave anything that holds you back from deeper love. Come follow me. . ’

‘Hurry down, Zacchaeus, because I must stay at your house today. . ’ The invitation to ‘Come and See’ is there for us all. . . Luke 19: 1 -10

I am Zacchaeus. I, too need to leave behind my concerns of what others think of me. Jesus, when you approach my tree of life, when you ask to come to the home of my heart, may I be ready. Help me to respond to your call and live the message of the gospel, even though I may experience criticism and rejection. Help me to accept your invitation to ‘Come and See’

Grant me the courage to leave behind whatever keeps me from you and to trust you with my life. Keep me open to the adventure of life where I meet you day by day. Help me to remember that you look upon me with love. Thank you for the call to be your disciple. Amen!

Come and See is an invitation to exploration and a promise of life for everyone. The invitation is open to all.

Religious Education. . . “For all children Religious Education is a proper subject in its own right in the school’s curriculum. It is a rigorous academic discipline, and as such it is to be taught, developed and resourced with the same commitment as any other subject. For those already engaged in the journey of faith Religious Education will be catechesis, and for some children Religious Education will be evangelisation, the first opportunity to hear the good news of the gospel. ” (RE Curriculum Directory p. 10)

The Catechism of the Catholic Church addresses: • the human search for meaning, • God’s initiative in Revelation who comes to meet us and • our response of faith. (cf. CCC 26) This pattern guides the structure of the programme and informs the process of each topic, opened up through; Explore, Reveal and Respond.

The Process. . .

1. Learning focus: Know and understand the qualities God gives us and wants us to develop Content: • • People are made to be like God, able to know and love. ‘Ourselves’ expresses the greatness of God. Christians are reminded of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. A long time ago, one of the priests in the Temple in Jerusalem wrote about the creation of people we can read his story in the Book of Genesis. God’s Story 3 page 10 based on Genesis 1: 26 -31. Made to be like God Some key questions • • • What does this story tell you about the writer? What did he believe about the world? What qualities did God give people and how would God like them to develop? What phrase or sentence make wonder and question? What does it tell you about the way people made in God's image ought to love? Did anything surprise you? Why not? Some suggested activities • • • Within a template of a human figure, or in a mind mapping way, write the qualities which you think God has given that person, and with an arrow from each quality indicate how these could be developed. Encourage the children to start a journal or use one they already have. This technique gives children an opportunity to reflect on some aspect of their learning in an ongoing, personal way. The Suggested activity ideas should take place in an atmosphere of reflection and be done individually. The content of a journal is personal, to be shared with others only if the child wishes to do so. Spend some time by yourself each day. Think about the qualities you have and the qualities you need to develop. Ask yourself: What did I do today? Write down or illustrate whatever thoughts come into your head. You could even record questions.

JUDAISM ROSH HASHANAH, YOM KIPPUR Year 6 Judaism is taught for one week every year. Each year the pupils learn more about how their Jewish sisters and brothers live and what they believe as theme develops. The themes are the same for all religions. Teachers notes: Yom Kippur is probably the most important holiday of the Jewish year. Many Jews who do not observe any other Jewish custom will refrain from work, fast and/or attend synagogue services on this day. The name “Yom Kippur” means “Day of Atonement, ”. It is a day set aside to atone for the sins of the past year. There are 10 Days of Awe, before Yom Kippur to put thing right with others. On Yom Kippur, the judgment is sealed. This day is the last chance to demonstrate repentance and make amends.
