LET’S SEE WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW in Spanish EXPLAIN MEANING : • Si estudio, apruebo • Si estudio, aprobaré • Si estudiara, aprobaría • Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado. FAIL
ZERO CONDITIONALS Si estudio, apruebo • TRANSLATION: – if I study, I pass • STRUCTURE: If+present, present • MEANING: facts that always happen or are always true
1 st CONDITIONALS Si estudio, aprobaré • TRANSLATION: If I study, I’ll pass If I study, I might pass If you want to pass, study! • STRUCTURE: if+present, future/modal/imperative • MEANING: expresses a possible (real) situation in the present and its probable result in the future. “If you have time tomorrow, come and have lunch with us” ,
unless = if…not • Unless she studies, she won’t pass – A no ser que estudie, no aprobará = If she doesn’t study, she won’t pass ,
To be continued…
END OF FIRST CONDITIONAL and remember:
2 nd CONDITIONALS Si estudiara, aprobaría • TRANSLATION: If I studied, I’d pass • STRUCTURE: if+past simple, conditional (would+INF) • MEANING: express an imagined, hypothetical situation in the present (not real!) and its probable result in the future. We usually use the seconditional to show that the ‘real’ situation of the subject in the ‘if-clause’ is unlikely to change. – ‘If he had money, he would travel around the world’ • Is the speaker rich now? No • Is it probable that this person will be rich in the near future? No
To give advice • Si tú fueras yo, qué harías? – If you were me, what would you do? • Si yo fuera tú, la llevaría al cine. – If I were you, I would take her to the cinema. If I was you • With this structure, always use ‘were’. (If I were you, if he were me…)
END OF 2 ND CONDITIONAL
3 rd CONDITIONALS (or impossible conditions) Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado. • TRANSLATION: if she had studied, she would have passed • STRUCTURE: if+past perfect, conditional perfect (would have+ past participle) • MEANING: to express a regret for an impossible situation in the past which has no solution.
Si lo hubiera sabido, …. … habría ayudado. … podría haber ayudado. … quizá habría ayudado. If I’d worked last week, I’d have had money in my pocket to buy you flowers! What does the ‘d stand for?
A little laugh!
