Basic gates and Universal gates Learning Objectives : The students should be able to: • Demonstrates the usage of Digital trainer kit. • Describe basic digital logic components and use and/or interpret their representation in truth tables
Logic Gates The building blocks used to create digital circuits are logic gates There are three elementary logic gates and a range of other simple gates Each gate has its own logic symbol which allows complex functions to be represented by a logic diagram. The function of each gate can be represented by a truth table or using Boolean notation.
The AND gate (d) IC 7408
The OR gate (d) IC 7432
The NOT gate (or inverter) (d) IC 7404
The Exclusive OR gate
The Exclusive NOR gate
Universal Gates
The NAND gate IC 7400 2 input NAND gate IC 7410 3 input NAND gate IC 7420 4 input NAND gate
The NOR gate (d)IC 7402
Logic expression Realization using basic gates Implement the function
I. Few Practice Examples I. Implement the following Boolean expressions. II. Apply the concepts of Boolean algebra to realize all basic gates using NAND and NOR gates only. III. Half adder and Full adder realizations using minimum number of NAND and NOR only.
NOT gate using NAND and NOR AND gate using NAND.
OR gate using NAND and nor
