College Access Standards • Modeled after ASCA national standards • Provide framework for college access programming • Allow organizations to assess their outcomes
CAP Training • 1 Module = 4 Sessions • Each module: Approximately 8 weeks, with 4 -6 hours of work per 2 week session • Sessions include readings, an activity and online discussion • 20 Professional development hours per module
CAP Training for AZ GEAR UP SCHOOLS • Special On-Line Course for GEAR UP Schools Only! • One module offered twice yearly (September and January) • Earn 20 Professional development hours per module • 3 online college access modules – a different module offered each year
1 Module Offered Twice Each Year • Module One: Building a College Completion Culture for All Students (September or January 2014 -15) • Module Two: College, Career and Academic Planning (September or January 2015 -16) • Module Three: Financial Aid and College Applications (September or January 2016 -17)
Module One: Building a College Completion Culture For All Students • Session One: Role of the Counselor in Promoting Career and Academic Planning • Session Two: Developing a Mission of College Access and Completion • Session Three: Understanding and Working with Diverse Populations for College Access and Completion • Session Four: Communicating a Mission for College Completion
CAP Training Example: Module 1 Goals (abridged) • Communicate the role of the school counselor • Advocate for student success • Promote a “college completion” mission • Identify how diversity impacts college access and completion • Develop strategies for communicating and working with diverse student/parent populations
