Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader Coloured book band scheme used to teach children how to read. Accelerated Reader used to choose appropriate books and teach comprehension of the text. Reading Age v Comprehension Age Questions given on the book after reading it in full. Tracks progress of books read over time. Used in years 4 -6.

Star Reading • Online test completed (STAR Reading) every half term in school. • This sends detailed information to the class teacher such as the comprehension age and the book range that the child should choose from. • You are able to view the Z. P. D. on your child’s progress page.

The Test

Z. P. D. After each test, the new Z. P. D. range is shared with your child. It can also be seen on the progress page. Each book is issued with a book level in a decimal format e. g. 2. 5. In year group corridors, books are grouped according to the decimal number. The higher the number, the more difficult the book will be and this is likely to reflect in the quiz score.

Helping Your Child Check progress together and discuss how they are doing. Ask lots of questions about what they are reading e. g. What has happened in this chapter? What do you think will happen next? How do you think the character is feeling? Why? Always encourage your child to link their answers back to the text.
