requirements for this summer(cont. ) • 6 hours behind-the-wheel • 6 hours in-car observation – parking lots – residential driving – downtown Mandan & Bismarck – rural highways – gravel roads – interstate highway driving – “test course” in Bismarck

behind-the-wheel(BTW) instruction – two - 45 minute BTW sessions per day • two – 45 minute observation sessions per day – meet instructors in the parking lot behind MHS – bring permit everyday – closed toe shoes required to drive • no sandals, flip-flops, slippers, … – all electronic devices will be turned off during BTW & observation – instructors will only drive if both students show up • BTW will need to be rescheduled

ND Learners Permit restrictions • be accompanied by a supervising driver in front seat – 18 yrs or older w/ license for 3 yrs • cannot operate any electronic communication device(calling or texting) • only operate parent’s, guardian’s, grandparent’s or sibling’s vehicle • may not operate vehicle between sunset/9 pm and 5 am except for work, school or religious activity

ND graduated drivers license • Learners Permit – minimum age 14 – pass knowledge test • Restricted License – minimum age 15 • Learners Permit for 1 year – (6 months for 16 -17 yr olds) • complete drivers education • 50 hours driving documented in log book • only parents, guardians, grandparents, sibling vehicle • under 16 prohibited from driving between sunset/9 pm and 5 am

ND graduated drivers license • Unrestricted License • under 18 prohibited from using cell phone while operating a motor vehicle

upon completion of MHS driver ed: 1) receive a certificate of training • must be presented when taking the NDDOT driving test or 2) receive a certificate of completion • NDDOT driving test is waived • present certificate to NDDOT • receive your license • randomly selected individuals will be required to take the driving test

• Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people age 15 to 20. • According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data: • Young drivers are twice as likely as adult drivers to be in a fatal crash. • Each year, more than 5, 000 teens (ages 16 -20) are killed in passenger vehicle crashes.

• Sixteen-year-old drivers have crash rates that are three times greater than 17 -year-old drivers, five times greater than 18 -year-old drivers, and twice the rate of 85 -year-old drivers. • 25 percent of 15 - to 20 -year-old drivers killed in motor vehicle crashes had been drinking.

• Teen drivers and passengers are among those least likely to wear their seat belts • a person who texts and drives is 23 times more likely to cause car crash • texting & driving is 6 times more likely to cause a crash than drunk driving
