Problem 1. My son doesn’t want to go to school in the mornings. He says he has a stomach ache but I know he isn’t sick. 2. My sister often borrows money from me and she never gives it back. 3. 4. My daughter is having problems with her reading. I practise with her every day, but she is getting stressed and she can’t read very easy words. I find English spelling very difficult. I can never remember how to spell words. 5. My teenage daughter seems to be very unhappy, but she doesn’t talk about it. If I ask her what is wrong she gets angry. Suggestion a. Perhaps you could try to learn one new word every day. You could get a special book, and write the words in it. At the end of every week maybe you could test yourself on all the words you learnt that week. b. I think maybe you should stop practising with her. She will not learn when she is stressed. Perhaps you could find a book she really likes and read it to her. When she starts to enjoy books again, then she will learn to read. c. Maybe you could talk to his teacher. You could ask her if he is happy at school, or if she has noticed a problem with him. d. Yes, girls can be very difficult at that age. Maybe you could take her on a trip to a place she will really like. Then if she relaxes and enjoys herself you could take her for a coffee or a nice meal and say how good it is to see her smiling. e. Perhaps you could sit down and have a chat with her. You could ask her what she wants the money for and why she doesn’t have enough money. Maybe you could say you will not lend her any more money if she ©borrowed British Council doesn’t pay back the money she before. 2
