What Is Father’s Day? Father’s Day is a celebration of the dads, grandads and father figures that are important to us. It is a way of saying thank you for everything they do for us. Often, children will give their fathers a card and a gift.
When Is Father’s Day? Father’s Day is always on a Sunday. Every year it is celebrated on the third Sunday in June.
The History of Father’s Day began in America in the early 20 th century – less than 100 years ago. A celebration of Father’s Day was started by a lady called Sonora Smart Dodd. She didn’t have a mum so her dad looked after her and 5 brothers and sisters all on his own.
The First Father’s Day Sonora Smart Dodd suggested to the Pastor at her church that they have a Fathering Sunday to celebrate dads. During the church service, all the children handed out red roses to their dads.
The First Father’s Day Everyone in the church was encouraged to wear a red or white rose to remember the dads who weren’t there. After the service, Sonora Smart Dodd went out into her town and took red roses to all the men who were unable to make it to church.
Father’s Day Today, Father’s Day is celebrated all around the world. If you don’t have a dad you might have a grandad, uncle or special friend you could say thank you to.
Father’s Day Today Many people choose to make or give their dad a card. Other people give presents such as a tie, a mug or some chocolate. All dads are different and will all like different gifts!
Father’s Day Gifts Many daddies just want to have a cuddle and be told how much they are loved. You could make a card and write a list of all the things you love about your dad. Why not ask a grown-up to help you make your dad a cup of tea and his favorite breakfast in bed on Father’s Day?
