MOTHER’S DAY & FATHER’S DAY IN TURKEY
�As in a few other countries, in Turkey Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Despite the strong “father” and “ancestor” idea within culture, Father’s Day is not as popular as Mother’s Day.
�Mother’s Day is celebrated on different dates in many countries, but along with America , Germany and many others , Turkey celebrates it on the second Sunday of May.
�Now , we will learn about the importance of Mother’s Day in Turkish culture and how it is celebrated.
�Even tough nowadays Mother’s Day is considered to be a commercial , both before and after Islam in Turkish culture mothers are considered saintly.
�For that reason, in Turkish language there are countless maxims, sayings and proverbs about mothers.
�The saying that states : “ If one cries , it would only be my mother. ” suggests that mothers are the ones who truly feel their children’s pain.
�Family has a very special place in Turkish culture and mothers are the building block of this institution.
�Traits such as self-sacrifice , moral strength and the instinct of protection are all considered motherly. �Traditionally, the father symbolizes masculinity and power and he is the head of the family.
�A traditional Turkish mother generally takes care of the house and children. Mothers generally live with their parents(boy or daughter) until they get married.
�However, in modern Turkish families , there are working mothers who give their children more freedom.
�Nowadays on Mother’s Day , people wake up early. �Children buy a bouqet of flowers or prepare breakfast for their mothers. �Jewelry, bags, clothes and perfume are also among the popular choices of presents. �On Father’s Day presents such as cologne, necties and books or something related to their hobbies are common.
�Generally on that day, either lunch or dinner is eaten in a restaurant as a family. �Grandmothers and grandfathers are also invited to this meal.
�If children are too young to buy presents , the husband takes responsibility for the arrangements. �Those whose mothers or fathers are deceased pay a visit to the cemetry.
Interesting Facts �The Anatolian mother goddess, before Common Era, especially around the Hittite and Phrygian periods was called Kibele(Cybele). She is associated with fertility and abundance. This female figure emphasizes Earth’s abundance
�And also , it is believed that Prophet Muhammed commanded : �“ Paradise lies at the feet of the mothers. ”
�What he suggests here is that children should respect, obey and love their mothers. �According to his suggestion , only people who treat their mothers with respect are worthy of having the key to heaven.
