Get to Know Me My experience This is my 17 th year as a middle school teacher! I started in 2004 at Wantz Middle School in Miamisburg before joining the SMS family in 2009. I taught 7 th grade only at Wantz and was a Science and Writing teacher. At SMS, I've taught 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade Science, and 7 th grade Literature. My background I grew up in Fremont, OH. I attended St. Joseph Grade School, St. Joseph Central Catholic High School (now part of the Bishop Hoffman school system), and the University of Dayton.

Science Topics of Study 6 th Grade Topics: Science, Technology, and Engineering, Earth's Resources, Cells, Earth's Organisms, Energy and Motion, and Matter. 8 th Grade Topics: Science, Technology, and Engineering, Earth's Surface, The Restless Earth, Earth's History, Reproduction and Heredity, Life over Time, and Forces and Motion.

Science Homework will be given on a regular basis. It is meant to review

Science Homework will be given on a regular basis. It is meant to review what we do in class or work ahead in preparing for quizzes/tests. Examples of homework may include making graphic organizers to demonstrate your knowledge of the content area, writing outlines of the lessons, and the occasional review worksheet for a very important concept. Some assignments will be due the next day, some may be due in a day or two.

English We will be working with the Voyages textbook to help us with our

English We will be working with the Voyages textbook to help us with our grammar curriculum. We will using the Vocab Workshop Level B book for vocabulary this year. We will have a test every two weeks. Finally, we will be studying five Latin or Greek roots each week, with a quick assessment each Friday. We’ll talk more about this next week.

English Homework will be given on a regular basis. It is meant to practice

English Homework will be given on a regular basis. It is meant to practice what was started in class, and work towards our unit tests. Homeworksheets will only be ten questions a night and due the next day. Before each unit’s test, we will play Kahoot to review in class!

Vocabulary Homework We will complete a new vocabulary unit every two weeks. Flash cards

Vocabulary Homework We will complete a new vocabulary unit every two weeks. Flash cards are due on Friday before the test. Choosing the Right Word and Synonyms/Antonyms due Tuesday before the test. Complete the Sentence and Vocab in Context due Thursday before the test. If these dates change, I’ll let you know!

English Language Arts Anchor Standards Conventions of Standard English – Students will demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking and demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. Knowledge of Language – Students will use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening, and choose language that expresses ideas precisely and concisely, recognizing and eliminating wordiness and redundancy. Vocabulary Acquisition and Use – Students will determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 7 reading and content choosing flexibly from a range of strategies, demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meaning, and acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression.

Assignments and Late Work � Assignments will be given reasonable due dates for the type of assignment. Assignments are expected to be turned in on time. If an assignment is one day late, they will be taken as 70% of the grade you receive. If you turn in an assignment two days past due or later, it will be entered in the grade book as one (1) point to show that you have turned it in, but credit will not be received.

Grades � All grades will be entered as points. Grades will not be weighted, as some assignments will have higher point values than others. Types of assignments will include but not be limited to: HW, CW, Labs, Quizzes, Tests, Science in the News, Worksheets, Essays, Root Words, etc.

Absences If you are absent for an extended period, work will be sent home

Absences If you are absent for an extended period, work will be sent home to you via Teams. You can either turn it in through Teams or the next day you’re back, depending on the length of your absence. If it’s only one day, please check my website and I’ll give you the work when you return!

Emergency Drills When I am with you, we go to the following places for

Emergency Drills When I am with you, we go to the following places for the following types of drills: For an evacuation (fire) drill, from my 6 P, 6 G, 7 C, 7 L, or 8 D, we will go out the south doors of the school and line up on Astoria to take attendance. From 8 M, we go down the stairs and out the front door to Erie, and then walk down Welling Way to Astoria where we will line up and take attendance. In a Shelter In Place (tornado) drill, 6 G and 7 L goes to the middle storage room next to the boiler room. 6 P and 7 C goes to the supplies storage room. 8 M goes tot the hall outside the first floor restrooms. 8 D goes to the hall outside the cafeteria near Erie Avenue. In either drill or actual event, you are to be silent the entire time so you can listen to my instructions.

Science: Notebook for vocab and homework, three-pronged folder for VIPs (Very Important Papers), and holding other papers, Worktext, writing supplies (Black or Blue ink pen, regular pencil, highlighter) English: The first section of your three-subject notebook will be used with me. Ms. Dove will be using the second and third sections. You will be given VIPs (Very Important Papers) that will be kept in the three-pronged part of your folder. They will be three-hole punched when given to you so you recognize their importance! We will clean out the folders throughout the year. You also always need to have a silent-reading book of your choice with you for all classes. I will also give you the blue Root Word Study Folder until we have our 1 to 1 tablets up and running! Index cards will be needed for vocabulary flash cards each week.
