Geography Strand Vocabulary • Geography- the study of the Earth’s physical and human features • Relative Location- where something is in relation to other places. Example: Lancaster is located east of Harrisburg • Absolute Location- the exact location of a place is its global address, where it is on the whole earth Example: Harrisburg is located at 40 degrees North Latitude and 76 degrees West Longitude

• • • Geography Strand Vocabulary Continued Physical Feature- landforms, bodies of water, climate, soil and plant and animal life. Human Feature- Buildings, roads, and people are some of a place’s human features. Region- an area on earth whose features make it different from other areas. Cause- an event or action that makes something else happen. Effect- the result of an event or action

History Strand Vocabulary • History- the study of people and the events of the past. • Chronology- the record of events in the order in which they happened. • Oral History- Accounts of events told by people who did not have a written language or write down what happened. • Historical Empathy -understanding the actions and feelings of people from other times and places.

Culture Strand Vocabulary • Culture- a unique way of life that sets a group of people apart from others. • Society- an organized group of people that are living under a set of rules and traditions. • Heritage- A set of ideas that have been passed down from one generation to another.

Government Strand Vocabulary • Government- An organized system that groups use make laws and decisions. • Civic Participation- Concern with and involvement in the community, state, and world.

Economy Strand Vocabulary Economy- the way that people use resources to meet their needs. Economics- the study of the way that goods and wealth are produced, distributed and used.
