Coherent emission ? If we constrain the size to be less than ct, t < 2 min is the decay time of the 1 -Jy bursts, then the brightness temperature is 10^12 K (D/70 pc)^2, where D is the distance to the source. If the transient source is at the Galactic Centre, its brightness temperature far exceeds 10^12 K, the upper limit for incoherent synchrotron radiation produced by relativistic electrons gyrating in a magnetic field, Therefore its emission seems to be coherent. 8 th December 2009, RRI ICRAR 7

Maximum size of emission region is 8 R (from the time-scale of change in polarisation) It has to be within 10 pc if the emission is incoherent. 8 th December 2009, RRI ICRAR 14

But future is bright • Keeping in mind that 1 st phase of Lofar and MWA is almost ready and ASKAP is also not far away, the future of science related to transient radio detection is bright enough. Image credit & copyright: Babak Tafreshi (TWAN) 8 th December 2009, RRI ICRAR 19
