Paratext Lite training John Thomson, Kenya LTCT, March 2019
What is Paratext Lite? • Android App • Subset of Paratext functionality • Edit • Make notes and respond to them • Send/Receive • Works with Paratext • Not a substitute
Why use Paratext Lite? • An Android tablet may be cheaper than a laptop • An Android tablet typically uses less power than a laptop • For some people the Android UI may be easier and more familiar • A tablet may be less conspicuous and intimidating than a laptop • (Show video)
A typical scenario • Work at translation center one month out of three • Sufficient power for laptop available • Main translation effort • Consultants or translators raise questions to be answered in community testing • Work in community the rest of the time • • • Only enough power for tablet Main focus is community testing Answer some questions Raise others Note problems. Possibly fix some problems.
Disadvantages of using Paratext Lite • Many functions not available • Checking • Back translation • Editing and adding markup • Small screen • Tablet keyboard is inconvenient and takes up a lot of screen • Precise cursor placement is difficult with touch • External keyboard and mouse are possible, but then other advantages are reduced.
Exercise 1: Setup • Install and register Paratext Lite • Send/receive to get the training project (and your own, if you wish) into Paratext Lite • Set up two windows showing your translation and a source text • Get a resource that could work as a source • Add a window to show it • Add a third window showing a commentary or similar resource • The Filter for control may help
Exercise 2: Editing • We will assign each pair a passage in the training project • Change something in your passage on your laptop. • Use Send/Receive to get the change to Paratext Lite • Change something in Paratext Lite • Use Send/Receive to get the change to the laptop • If possible, try doing this with a USB or SD card • Verify that you also receive changes others make
Exercise 3: Notes • Use Paratext Lite to make a note about a passage. Assign it to someone. • Use Send/Receive to transfer the note to a laptop and another instance of Paratext Lite • Add responses to the note on all three devices • Use Send/Receive to get all the responses onto all three devices • Resolve the note on the laptop • Send/receive to Paratext Lite
Exercise 4: conflicts • Use Send/receive to make sure laptop and tablet agree • Make a change to the same verse on both devices. • Send/receive • Note what happens • Work out how to recover • If the first change you made is right • If the second one is right • If both had good elements and the ideal result is something new
