Neurodiagnostic Technologist � � Assists in diagnosing neurologic disorders involving the brain, central nervous system, and sleep disorders. Uses various specialized diagnostic equipment to perform tests that help doctors diagnose disorders. � Work in hospitals, clinics, and doctor’s offices. � Expand career into sub-specialties: ◦ ◦ ◦ � Long term monitoring (LTM) for epilepsy Nerve Conduction (NCV) Evoked Potentials (EP) Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) Polysomnography Growing Field
Neurodiagnostic Technology � � This medical diagnostic field is devoted to the recording of electrical activity in the brain and nervous system. The neurodiagnostic technologist is capable of performing a variety of advanced diagnostic tests: ◦ Electroencephalograms ◦ Nerve conduction studies ◦ Electromyography ◦ Intraoperative monitoring of nerves and muscle responses
Neurodiagnostic Technology Technologists work in collaboration with medical researchers, clinicians, physicians, and other health professionals.
Salary Ranges � West Coast States Median Salary $83, 000 � San Diego starts at around $27. 00 per hour � Median Annual Salary $65, 000 *ASET Salary Survey Report for 2018
Neurodiagnostic Technology Program San Diego Mesa College � � 22 Month Program starting Fall 2021 Graduates are eligible to sit for the national credentialing board exam (ABRET - American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential technologists) ◦ Approximately 65 units in the Program � � Hands on clinical rotations with local hospitals Currently seeking accreditation through CAAHEP
Pre-Requisites � Medical Terminology ◦ MEDA 110 Med Terminology � Human Anatomy & Physiology ◦ MEDA 055 Human Anatomy & Physiology or ◦ BIOL 160 Human Anatomy & Physiology or ◦ BIOL 230 & 235 – Human Anatomy & Physiology � Communications ◦ COMS 135 Interpersonal Communications (preferred) or ◦ COMS 103 Oral Communication ◦ Acceptance into the program is contingent on successful completion with a C or higher.
Program Focus � � The Neurodiagnostic Technology program provides theory, laboratory experience, and clinical experience in electroencephalography (EEG) with an introduction to Evoked Potentials (EP), Polysomnography (PSG), Nerve Conduction Studies (NCV), Long-term monitoring (LTM), Intraoperative Neurophysiological monitoring (IONM), and Transcranial Doppler studies (TCD) These testing procedures include polysomnography (PSG), nerve conduction studies (NCS), long-term monitoring (LTM) for epilepsy, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) and transcranial doppler (TCD) studies.
