No Age Limits for Moms? We recently happened upon an interesting story about a banded Laysan albatross named “Wisdom” (a banded bird is one with an identification number attached to its leg for tracking purposes). Wisdom was banded in 1956 at the approximate age of five. She is not only the oldest banded bird known in the world but also one of the world’s oldest moms.

She and her mate (known as Goo or Mr. Goo) have returned faithfully every year to the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, located in the North Pacific Ocean. This year, Wisdom, who is believed to be at least 65 years of age, was found with an egg. After a successful incubation period, the egg hatched and out popped a little chick, named Kūkini (Hawaiian for “messenger”). Belated congratulations to Wisdom and Goo, lifelong mates and proof that parenting is not just for the young but also for the young at heart.

◦ In 2005, in Germany, a 65 -year-old woman, using donated, fertilized eggs, gave birth to quadruplets. She was not a firsttime mother—she had 13 other children ◦ But the oldest mother currently on record is Omkari Panwar of India. Already a mother of two adult daughters, she went through IVF treatment at the age of 70 in order to present her 77 -year-old husband with his long-awaited son and heir. After a difficult pregnancy, Panwar delivered twins (a boy and a girl) a month early, and despite low birth weights of two pounds each, they survived. Can you imagine having a baby in your 50 s or 60 s? Can you think of any benefits to doing so? What would be your biggest concerns?
