測定に使用した英文1 Making Chicago Green The city of Chicago is the third-largest city in the United States. Almost 2, 900, 000 people live there. The city has many high-rise buildings. * In fact, the Sears Tower in Chicago is one of the tallest buildings in the world. Big cities like Chicago often have problems with the environment. For example, high-rise buildings make cities hot in summer, and cars and buses make the air dirty. The mayor* of Chicago, Richard M. Daley, wanted to do something about these problems. Thanks to him, Chicago’s environment has become cleaner and healthier. When Daley was a child in Chicago, he enjoyed playing outside in the parks. But during the 1960 s, and 1970 s, people cut down many of the trees in Chicago and built more and more buildings. When he became mayor in 1989, he decided to make the city green again. Since then, the city has planted 400, 000 trees. Mayor Daley even made a garden on the roof* of the city hall. It was the first city hall in the United States with a garden on its roof. Many other buildings in Chicago now have gardens on their roofs, too. In 2002, the city opened a center for people to learn about new ways to help the environment. At first, some people thought that Mayor Daley’s ideas would be too expensive and not very useful. But now, most people who live in the city think that his ideas are good for Chicago. People all over America are starting to learn from Chicago, and they hope to make their cities better places, too. l l l 実用英語検定試験2005年3級第2回問題より 12/8/2020 10

測定に使用した英文2 Ice Cream These days, many people around the world enjoyed eating ice cream, but it wasn’t always easy to get. Ice cream was very difficult to make at first, so it was expensive. Only people with a lot of money could eat it. In fact, the first ice desserts did not have cream in them. They were made from ice. The Emperor Nero* liked these ice desserts. Nero lived in Rome almost 2, 000 years ago, so there were no refrigerators. People had to carry ice and snow for Nero from the mountains far away. He put honey and fruit juice on the ice to make it sweet. Some people think that the first recipes* for ice desserts with cream came to Europe from China. In 1600 s, ice desserts with cream became popular with kings and queens in Italy, France, and England. People brought these recipes to America, and the first ice-cream shop in the United States opened in New York in 1776. People could get ice cream became easier to make. In 1846, a woman called Nancy Johnson invented* a machine that could make ice cream easily. In 1851, the first ice-cream factory started making ice cream for restaurants and stores in the United States. Now, people all over the world enjoy ice cream, but Americans eat more ice cream than people in any other country. In the U. S. , people can buy many different flavors of ice cream, but vanilla is the most popular. The second is chocolate. Nut and strawberry flavors are popular, too. 実用英語検定試験2005年3級第1回問題より 12/8/2020 11
