Istituto Comprensivo M. L. King CALTANISSETTA “I. C. M. L. King” is a Comprehensive State School with about 700 students and 90 teachers including 2 Primary Schools, 3 Nursery Schools and 2 Secondary Lower Schools situated in two different parts of the town.

The main building of the State Primary School " Michele Abbate , " is located in Leone XIII Street, in a residential area in the west part of Caltanissetta : a hilly town in the center of Sicily , 30 miles from the sea and 50 miles from the nearest mountain. The modern structure was completed in 2002. It consists of two floors and a basement. In this school you can find the Principal Office and all the Administration Staff Offices. There are 15 classrooms, a meeting room, a video / reading classroom, a computer lab , a multipurpose room , a language lab , a gymnasium with changing rooms , a large entrance hall , with an arena used mainly in theatrical activities , a teacher's room, a music lab and a big lunchroom. Each floor is equipped with adequate services to meet the needs of pupils with special needs. There is an elevator connecting the floors. There are two exits : the first one is the main entrance and the second one is in the back of the building , for the students who use the service host. The entrance doors are anti-panic , in compliance with safety standards. The building has a large courtyard with a sporting green area and the school garden where students seed vegetables and aromatic herbs.

Leone XIII and Cittadella Nursery schools are close to the Michele Abbate State Primary and Secondary School, in an expanding area with medium / high class users. Most of the parents are both employed in professional or clerical activities. They are new buildings, located on two floors, with two separate entrances, five communicating classrooms with bathrooms, changing rooms and laboratories. In addition, there is a large living room, the dining hall, the kitchen, a cozy courtyard and flowerbeds. Currently there are 6 sections operating at full time.

S. Flavia and Andersen Schools welcome children from one of the oldest neighborhoods in the historic city center S. Flavia. The large and populated district, is divided into two areas. A high part characterized by a wide street, intersected by narrower and shorter streets and by some small squares, with newly built buildings and good urban planning. The lower part behind the area, consists of a maze of steep, not very sunny, and narrow streets where there are old houses, some on the ground floor without adequate services to sanitation needs. In this area, recently, live some immigrants families with school-aged children attending the Institute. The activities carried out by the inhabitants are different , alongside some professionals and some employees, there are many unemployed, workers, street vendors and some craftsmen, there are few cases of freelancers or traders. Many families live with only one income A good part of families has got a lower secondary school license. The cultural level is medium or medium-low. The children of the neighborhood do not have green spaces and entertainment areas in which to play. The cultural and recreational opportunities of children are constituted by the activities of the Parish.
