Different roles? What are the different roles you carry out? • Work/study • Family/caring • Social
When juggling multiple roles give yourself permission to drop the ball from time to time.
Benefit or burden? Are these roles a benefit or burden?
Too many hats? Here a few signs that you’ve donned a hat or two too many: • You feel like you are perpetually running in circles and things are falling through the cracks. • You feel like you are failing more than you are succeeding. • People are complaining that you never have time for them. • You never have time to do what rejuvenates – R & R – rest and relaxation! • Frustration is on your most-used word list. • You are tired, unmotivated, and dissatisfied with your life. • You’ve accepted stress as a way of life!

Core competencies for law 1) Communication – written and spoken: • A lawyer’s primary job is to advise their clients on possible courses of action and help each client choose the best one. • The ability to communicate clearly and persuasively when writing or speaking is therefore essential. • Communication is not just between the lawyer and client but between lawyers and their colleagues on larger projects. • Having good interpersonal skills is also vital in a profession where people win and keep work through forming and maintaining strong relationships with clients.
How to demonstrate it? Examples: • If you have worked in a customer-facing role (retail) • Volunteered at a legal advice centre where you needed to both listen to and advise clients • Produced written documents, use these experiences as evidence of your communication skills. • Networking – the art of striking up conversations with people you don’t know – is another aspect of communicating which will give you a strong advantage if you have any experience of it, which you can talk about in applications and interviews.
Core competency 2) Teamwork and leadership • The ability to work well with others is fundamental for most lawyers. • Barristers are often characterised as loners. They need strong working relationships with their clerks - major criminal/commercial cases use teams of barristers, the work is just too much for one advocate. • Your ability to fit into a team dynamic and pull in the same direction as your potential colleagues. You don’t have to like everyone you come across but you must be able to work together. • It is more important to show that you are a good team player, but are also capable of acting with initiative and leadership when necessary.
How to demonstrate it? Examples: • Teamwork - Extracurricular activities - member of a sports team, playing in a music band or other organising a community event. • Teamwork with family members to help manage work and family duties during lockdown. • Leadership – think about any time that you have taken the initiative, thought of a unique solution, or done the organisational legwork to get your colleagues, friends or teammates on the right track.
Core competency 3) Accuracy and attention to detail • As a lawyer you will be working with clients and other lawyers on matters where the stakes are high • Attention to detail is a very important skill to cultivate – making sure wording and figures are accurate for the task in hand.
How to demonstrate it? Examples: • Look back through your previous work experiences, extracurricular activities and academic work. E. g. volunteer work during lockdown for example - you would have had to follow specific procedures in carrying out your duties. • Making sure you don’t forget to do something for one the various roles you carry out – easy to forget!
Core competency 4) Commercial awareness • Understanding the industry and changes that may be happening e. g. Job losses due to the pandemic, impact on employment sector and relevance of post lockdown on workforce. • Law firms closing offices to allow more remote working – changes to how the legal industry will operate in the future. (One firm is closing their London office and allowing 200 employees to work remotely).
How to demonstrate it? Examples: • Keep an eye on the news and industry media • Has it happened to you?
Core competency 5) Drive and determination • Motivation is an essential quality for careers in the legal sector. • Employers want to recruit people who they can trust will get the work done to the highest standard, and to tight deadlines.
How to demonstrate it? Examples: • Goals – better lifestyle, increase skills etc. • Successes • Lockdown - career changers, taking the step to pursue the legal career you always wanted.
