Simplified financing modalities • ‘Internal Funds’ = ‘Bijzonder Onderzoeksfonds’ (BOF) and ‘Industrieel Onderzoeksfonds’ (IOF) + own university funding • PF, GOA, OT, KP, IDO, CREA, DBOF, HB, F+ • => 3 project categories: Category 1 (C 1), Category 2 (C 2), Category 3 (C 3) • Leverage to external funding

Strategic basis research that is society-driven and will meet societal and/or economic challenges in a (medium) long time frame. Societal-economic added value. Leverage to, for instance, FWO, Hercules 3, Marie Sklodowska Curie, FET, BELSPO, ERC and ESFRI project applications. General concepts • Statute promoter o o o ZAP, ZAP-track University hospital staff with at least the rank of (assistant) hospital director, and ZAP appointment ERC grant holder or a postdoctoral researcher with Odysseus funding Researchers with a minimum 10% ZAP appointment and 1) being PI at VIB or NERF or 2) being research manager with a full appointment at HIVA; Special Lecturer in Arts (‘Bijzonder Gastdocent in de Kunsten’); Postdocs (funded by a regional or international mandate and with a minimum 3 years of postdoctoral experience) with a copromotor which meets one of the other statute conditions of promotor

General concepts • Statute copromoter o o Anyone that can be a promoter KU Leuven researcher with a Ph. D Researchers from the ad hoc list and Researcher in Arts (‘Onderzoeker in de Kunsten’) with a Ph. D; KU Leuven ATP member with highly esteemed scientific qualifications. • Appointment percentages and periods: o o Promoter: with a minimum 50% appointment in promoter statute (except for VIB, NERF and HIVA) for the entire duration of the project. Copromoter: with a minimum 10% appointment in copromoter statute for the entire duration of the project (except for postdocs with approved motivation).

General concepts • Only during the last year of an ongoing project, applicants can submit a new project application within the same category. • If the remaining budget at the beginning of the last year of the project > total project budget / # project years, a new project application cannot be submitted and the end date of the current project will be postponed. • If the requested budget > 600 k€ • ‘visitatie’ (site visit) • rebuttal • science outreach

Project based funding – In general Procedure for C 1, C 2 and C 3 o Application forms via the guidelines (mid July 2015) o Declaration of intent: 30 September 2015 o Feedback result declaration of intent (including recommended category): Early December 2015 o (Pre-application in case of external peer review: 15 January 2016) – might be lifted ! o Full application: ± 31 January 2016 (C 3: other timing) o Advice: End of May 2016 at the latest (C 3: other timing) o Start date of the projects: 1 October 2016

Category 3 (C 3) - extra • If urgent tech transfer of research results without financial means • Application (submission after positive feedback LRD) for support invention (max. 25. 000 EUR) • Granted by vicerector Research Policy and by chair of IOF Council (if necessary, with advice of IOF Council members and/or KU Leuven experts) • (Co)promoters of ongoing or applied C 3 projects: no application possible for this type of funding.

Other Start funding starting ZAP: • first ZAP appointment KU Leuven, 80%, max. 7 years postdoc, no other substantial funding • + BOFZAP professors • Granted for 2 years and 50 k€/year • Leverage to additional national and international funding Exploratory European Co-operation (‘Verkennende Europese Samenwerking’ - VES) • To support multi-partner research initiatives in an international context, that lead to the submission of high quality project applications within the European Framework Programme (Horizon 2020) and others. • Only for coordinators of a network

Other Runners-up funding (RUN) • For applicants of Horizon 2020 multipartner projects that were given an excellent rating and a high ranking, but which were not funded due to budget constraints. • Extra conditions (on reserve list, minima for budgets, e. o. ) • Characteristics: o Budget to be used for 3 years – time to improve and submit the application in a next call. o Size: - Co-ordinators: € 200. 000 - Partners: € 45. 000 o Only one RUN per EU project

Other International Co-operation Projects (ISP) – China Fund and Latin American Fund • To establish new and to strengthen existing bilateral relations. • At least 1 KU Leuven researcher and at least one researcher from a partner university. • Characteristics: o o o Duration: 1 or 2 years Max. 12. 5 k€ or 20 k€ for traveling expenses of KU Leuven researchers and subsistence cost of partners when staying in Leuven Deadline: 18 June 2015 (LA) , October 2015 (China)

Person based funding Postdoctoral Positions (PDM) • full-time research mandates of 1 year to strenghthen the candidate’s • • profile and be a leverage to a long term postdoctoral position from an external funding authority New: KU Leuven doctoral students + non-KU Leuven doctoral students. 1 chance (defended Ph. D between 1 st March in the year before the deadline’s year and 31 st December in the deadline’s year. ) • Next deadline: March 2016. Senior fellowships (SF) • Bringing in new knowledge and expertise into the KU Leuven group • ≥ 7 years postdoctoral experience, Ph.
