God’s Loving Plan: • provides guidance on how children can be helped to develop healthy and respectful attitudes to their bodies and to relationships with families and friends • connects children’s learning about who they are and how they relate to others, to their learning about God and their relationship in faith. • helps children to understand how love can be at the heart of their lives and what the Church’s vision is of Marriage as the ultimate expression of love between man and woman. • Information for Parents 2

What Do We Want To Achieve? • Primary 5 will develop their understanding of loving relationships , rights and respect (for themselves and for others). • Primary 6 will have a greater understanding of how the human body changes physically and emotionally through puberty. They will learn the biological names for body parts. • Primary 7 will have a greater understanding of conception within a loving and marital relationship. Information for Parents 13
Primary 5 Pupils Will: • Read the stories of creation, reflecting on the fact that God saw his creation as being good. • Be encouraged to see the beauty of God’s creation in themselves and will begin to recognise that their growing bodies are part of God’s plan for them. • Reflect on their own gifts and talents and how they can be used for the common good. Primary 5 Pupils Will: • Learn of the importance of showing respect for the rights of others in their daily lives. • Discuss the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation in order to restore their relationship with God and others. Information for Parents 15
Primary 6 Children Will: • Deepen their understanding of the stories of creation, exploring the unique relationship between God and man. • Learn that God has a plan for them and that the physical, emotional and spiritual changes that they experience as they approach adolescence are part of this plan. • Explore the physical and emotional changes which girls and boys begin to experience during puberty. Primary 6 Children Will: • Begin to recognise that they are strengthened by the Holy Spirit and the sacramental life of the Church in their decision making. • Begin to recognise that, in the Beatitudes, Jesus offers them a guide for Christian living, growth and fulfilment. Primary 7 Children Will: • Investigate the complimentary nature of science and Scripture as they deepen their understanding of God’s creation. • Reflect on the Sacrament of Matrimony and the commitment which a husband wife make to one another in the sacrament. • Learn that sexual intercourse, in the context of marriage, is a sign of God’s love which can lead to new life. • Learn about the development of the child in the womb • Consider God’s precious gift of life from conception to natural death and the need to cherish and respect it • By reflecting on Jesus’ Temptations in the desert (Luke 4: 1 -13) the pupils will learn that, through prayer and the sacraments, God has given them the ability to resist temptation Information for Parents 22
Primary 7: Part 1 • What it means to love • The sacrament of matrimony • How the love of a married couple is part of God’s Loving Plan • How human life begins and how a baby is born • Making love with their bodies and so become “one flesh” Information for Parents 23
• God creates new life through their action of “making love. ” • Sexual intercourse - a joyful, pleasurable expression of love which may lead to the conception of a new life (The physical act of sex) • Sperm fertilises the egg • The baby in the womb Information for Parents 24
How can parents help? • be positive about your child growing up • equip them with correct language when talking about their body parts • assure them that physical changes in puberty are natural • help them to adapt to changing emotions • how them to know that they are loved for themselves and not for how they look Information for Parents 25
• Families come in all shapes and sizes today • Teachers do not ‘judge’ any family situation • Marriage will be presented as the ideal setting for family life • Children will learn how the Sacrament of Matrimony celebrates the loving and faithful commitment of a man and woman Information for Parents 26
