UNESCO is convinced that no development can be sustainable without a strong culture component.

UNESCO is convinced that no development can be sustainable without a strong culture component. • In today’s interconnected world, culture's power to transform societies is clear. • Its diverse manifestations – from our cherished historic monuments and museums to traditional practices and contemporary art forms – enrich our everyday lives in countless ways. • Heritage constitutes a source of identity and cohesion for communities disrupted by bewildering change and economic instability. • Creativity contributes to building open, inclusive and pluralistic societies. • Both heritage and creativity lay the foundations for vibrant, innovative and prosperous knowledge societies. - See more at: http: //en. unesco. org/themes/protecting-our-heritage-andfostering-creativity#sthash. 6 nh 3 NXGg. dpuf

Service Learning • Remember Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs? We’re near the top of the pyramid! • Result of combining and building upon all of the teaching/learning methods • The “public product” in this case, is a service project – to help another person! • Fishing for Success would aim to provide food for the community of the youth who fished • More specifically, the youth would catch the fish, process the fish, then make a meal of the fish for others in their community; ex: their peers, their seniors or homeless in their neighbourhood

Ecojustice Learning • Now, we are at the top of the pyramid! • educational

Ecojustice Learning • Now, we are at the top of the pyramid! • educational efforts of students, teachers, and members of the local community learning collaboratively while engaged in revitalizing the local commons. Eco. Justice Education is shaped by an understanding that local and global ecosystems are essential to all life; challenging the deep cultural assumptions underlying modern thinking that undermine those systems; and the recognition of the need to restore the cultural and environmental commons. http: //cw. routledge. com/textbooks/9780415872515/toolbox. asp

• Teaching someone to fish and provide food for themselves and another, is a great equalizer. Think of the foundational step on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. • When those teachers are community elders or family, and the lessons are taught in the center of the community, it becomes a powerful and relevant lesson. • When that fish is a cultural food, that has attached to it an entire historical and political “baggage, ” therein lies the opportunity to question how the resource is managed by those in “power. ” • When that resource has a mythical, mystical value attached to it as a result of the cod moratorium and yet, it is also our food – there are pricelessons that can be taught about how we have to live in balance within our local ecosystem. • We are Nature – Not separate from it and not simply a part of it – We are Nature. • Ecology and Economy are linked – Ecojustice.

Purposes 1. re-create the built structures of a functioning traditional inshore fishing premise and put it into action! 2. educate young people about Newfoundland Labrador's traditional inshore fishing knowledge, skills, and culture 3. empower young people to make decisions about their future by providing them with information about appropriate conservation behaviours and introducing them to careers associated with freshwater and marine environments 4. strengthen community bonds by providing the means through which older members in the community can share their knowledge, wisdom, and skill with the younger members 5. promote the physical and mental health of youth through traditional purposeful outdoor activities, including : hiking, foraging, and gardening; encouraging formation of personal bonds to nature (not just fishing!) 6. provide locals and tourists to Petty Harbour, NL with a rich cultural experience by maintaining and allowing access to waters of Petty Harbour, the fishing premise museum structures and wooden boats, and participation in appropriate educational or experiential programs

Our music and our art, our craft and our food celebrate our connection to the Sea that has sustained our families for generations. Island Rooms of Petty Harbour, once the fishing premises of twelve families, will be rebuilt as a re-creation of a family fishing premise from sheds, twine loft, flake, stages, and stageheads … to the little wooden boats. Youth will be taught the local knowledge and skill of the cod handline fishery by community fishers. The fishing premise will be put into action as the youth learn the trade: fish being caught, processed, made, dried, and salted on the flake. Tourists will be able to visit and watch the learning in progress or join in! The following programs are one of three types: 1. Join In – re-create the daily work of a family fishing premise for families, locals, and tourists who might drop in 2. Age or school grade levelled (target: school groups, Scouts, Guides; aligned to curriculum outcomes; tailored to teacher needs) 3. Youth Cod Fishery (14+ year old Newfoundland & Labrador youth and community elder fishers)
