Information -In Finland we have many swamps, peatlands, pine bogs etc. -We have over 30 types of peatlands: aspen swamp, pine bog, spruce mire etc. -Mire is a plant community, which produces peat Mires are generally wet places (remember rubber boots)!

What are we going to do in Finland? - visit some different peatlands - tell about different types of swamps; bog, mire and fen - study the charateristics of mires - take some peat samples with a drill (called kaira), measurements

Different types of mires Raised bog/aapasuo - in southern Finland - the middle some lichens of the andraised trees bog is higher than the edge of it - in northern Finland - the middle of string bog is lower than the edge of it - there is lots of water in the middle of the string bogand the edges are dry - less spaghnum moss than on the raised bog String bog/keidassuo Palsa bog/palsasuo - ice mound and they are formed by peat - low, often oval
