UNDERSTAND APPLICATIONS AND METHODS OF FIXING EMI
EXPANDED METAL LATH Aims: Introduction to Expanded Metal Lath (EML) Objectives: To identify EML areas of use and how it is fixed in place 3 /
EXPANDED METAL LATH Introduction What do you know? n What is EML made from? n How is EML fixed? n How do we cut EML? n What size horizontal laps are required when fixing EML? n What is rib lath? 4 /
EXPANDED METAL LATH What is EML? EML is used as a mechanical key for plaster and render. This may be because of the versatility of EML for use internally and externally to form abstract shapes, or because there is not a suitable bond to the background. As well as being manufactured in galvanised steel it is also made in stainless steel. Ease of cutting with tin snips also add to the versatility of EML. 5 /

EXPANDED METAL LATH Typical uses Expanded metal lath can be used a carrier for external render, in this case when a layer of insulation has been applied to the external brickwork. 9 /
EXPANDED METAL LATH Typical uses In this case the EML strips, which come in coils, have been used as a carrier for plaster covering a recessed service pipe. Also used to provide a key on timber wall plates and timber lintels. 10 /
EXPANDED METAL LATH Conclusion You should now have the knowledge to complete the following: n What is EML? n What is EML made from? n How is EML fixed? n How do we cut EML? n What size horizontal laps are required when fixing EML? n What is rib lath? 11 /
