What is Network security? Network security means protecting data and resources from any unauthorized access. It is the process of taking preventative measures to protect the underlying networking infrastructure from unauthorized access, misuse, malfunction, modification, destruction thereby creating a secure platform for computers, users, and programs to perform. It is the most important aspect in computer networking.

Network Security Since many users are accessing the same data , so we must ensure its proper security. Only authorized persons can access or modify data. The following points may happen in any organization- Some employees may try to change the data concerning their salaries , leave records , Exam results etc. b) People outside the company may try to access confidential data. c) Accidental deletion of important data. d) Former employees or some other people may try to harm the company’s data. a)

Let’s consider a simple network attack Suppose Alice wants to communicate to Bob but distance is a problem. So, Alice sends an electronic mail to Bob via a network which is not secure against attacks. There is another person, Tom, who is on the same network as Alice and Bob. Now, as the data flow is open to everyone on that network, Tom alters some portion of an authorized message to produce an unauthorized effect. For example, a message meaning “Allow BOB to read confidential file X” is modified as “Allow Smith to read confidential file X”.

Network Security So, network security includes implementing different hardware and software techniques necessary to guard underlying network architecture. It is essential for overall cyber security because network is a significant line of defense against external attack.

Levels of Network security 1. Rights security – Based upon User name , Users are given rights like Read Only Access or Read Write Access or No Access at all. • A combination of Rights can also be granted to the same users for different sets of data.

Networking Terms WAP: -Wireless Access Point is a device that connects wireless communication devices to from a wireless network. Bluetooth: -Bluetooth is a wireless technology used to interconnect mobile phones, computers, Printers using short-range wireless connection. (30 feet approx. ) Node: -The computer in a network can communicate with each other as well as work independently. each computer in a network is called node.

Networking Terms Protocol –Protocol is a set of rules used by computers on a network to communicate with each other. Some examples of protocols are: HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol): It is a protocol used between a web server and a web browser for transferring HTML pages. TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) WI-FI: A Wi. Fi (Wireless Fidelity) Network is a wireless (no wires) network that connects to our Internet router and wireless-enabled devices (such as laptops, smartphones and printers) in our home using a wireless radio signal.
