Piloting a Network Support Model at the University of Maryland, Baltimore Educause Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference December 2001
UMB FACTOIDS Just Like Every Other University Except… Six Professional Schools l Medicine l l $200 Million of Medical Research/Year Telemedicine Program Delivering Medical Services to Under-served Areas of the State Shock Trauma Center w/Wireless Interactive Video Contact w/Paramedics Physicians Practice Plan Participates in a Campus Self-Insurance Plan That May Grow Statewide
UMB FACTOIDS l University Hospital As a Public Corporation l Has Purchased Three Other Hospitals l VA Hospital Adjacent to University Hospital
UMB FACTOIDS Just Like Every Other University Except… Six Professional Schools l Nursing l Founded By Student of Florence Nightengale l Operates Neighborhood Nursing Centers l Operates AHECS Around the State l Offers BS/RN Completely on Line l Operates Two Governor’s “Wellmobiles” l Has New Classrooms Designed From the Footprint of the Shock Trauma Center l Ranked in the Top Ten Nursing Schools in the Nation
UMB FACTOIDS Just Like Every Other University Except… l l Dental School l World’s First Dental School l National Dental Museum LAW l Three Programs Ranked in Top 10 Nationally l Owns and Operates Westminster Hall w/Pipe Organ Recitals l Maintains Edgar Allen Poe’s Gravesite
UMB FACTOIDS Just Like Every Other University Except… Six Professional Schools l Pharmacy l Social Work l Interdisciplinary Graduate School l Seven Presidents! l 5300 Students; 5300 Employees
UMB Network Environment Technical Staff: Approximately 200, But … Largest IT Organization Has About 35 Staff LAN Operating Systems: About 150 NT Servers About 150 Novell Servers E-Mail/Productivity: Groupwise Exchange/Outlook Pine, Netmail, etc. “Microsoft Campus”
Drivers that Make Information Technology Planning Important Mission of UMB IT is a strategic resource UMB IT Steering Committee Board of Regents e-Learning Maryland Network-based Enterprise-Wide System Implementations
IT Realities Prior to Pilot No Enterprise-wide IT vision Campus Data Communications support of the backbone to each building Computing infrastructure inside buildings owned & supported locally No plan for maintenance or renewal of network
Other Realities People were fearful about: l Losing autonomy l Changing procedures l Implementing new technologies l Losing Control!
Our Global Charge Form a working group from across Administration and Finance Identify our current/immediate infrastructure needs Develop a strategic plan/direction for A&F that can be used as a model for the campus
A&F Network Infrastructure When we Began An outdated “cobbled together” effort Cables and electronics working at: l 10 Mb shared l 10 Mb switched l 100 Mb shared l 100 Mb switched l No formal network support model

Desirable criteria for upgrade Integrated solution across A&F Scalability Reliability Maintenance and diagnostics 100 Mb switched to every desktop Gigabit backbone

What is outside the scope of the pilot? The Schools Parking Garage Pass System Surveillance Camera System Fire Alarm System Door Card Access Control System Facilities Electrical Metering Network Facilities HVAC Control System
Where are we now? We now have a centrally managed, 1 Gb switched enterprise network fiber backbone Solution, with VLANs and DHCP, as envisioned by the IT Steering Committee through the Board of Regents minimum standards.
(After)
Bonus Points During the upgrade VLANs and DHCP were implemented: industry standards for improving network efficiency and IP addressing
Additional Bonus Points People who need …
Time Frame From planning, through design, procurement, testing and implementation, the network upgrade took approximately one year!
What Went Well? Established close working relationships throughout the A&F IT community Solidified partnership with campus Data Communications Group We built a leading edge A&F information technology network that will support our enterprise needs for the next five years
Lessons Learned You can never overemphasize the need for better communication When facing change, you can never underestimate the power of fear Although our jobs may change, the need for our expertise will not go away
Our New Network Infrastructure Realization that network infrastructure is a 4 th utility on our campus The network is a capital asset Stewardship philosophy for capital assets applies; network must be built, maintained and renewed Seven year life for the infrastructure identified
Infrastructure Maintenance/Renewal We have buy-in for support to the jack Developed memorandum of understanding w/campus Data Communications Developed a financial support model based on number of active network jacks Setting aside 1/7 th of the cost of building the network each year so that we will have the money to renew our network
What’s Next We’re sharing our model with the schools on campus We’re exploring remote network monitoring Telling our story to our peers
