Foundation language for life Since 2012, there has been a partnership between the national ‘Foundation language for life’, the city council, libraries and ROC. The goal is to reduce low literacy in the country. Princess Laurentien - ambassador
Target audiance Low educated people who want to improve their basic skills.
Target audiance • Migrants: Dutch as 2 nd Language (ESOL), people who want to improve their reading and speaking skills • Refugees: extra support besides their regular integration program • Low literate people: in total 1. 3 million people between 16 -65 • Illiterates: formal learning (ROC)
Skillhouses • A skillhouse is a place where the target audience practice their basic skills with volunteers. • Mostly located in libraries or community centers. • The library coordinates the daily activities. • The ROC provides professional support to the volunteers. • Working together with local language providers • Organizing Creative activities • Taalcafé, Theater. Taal, Summerschoolworkshops • Language Consultation Hour

Volunteers of the Language Consultation hour Tasks: • Determine Learning purpose • Information and advice on formal and non-formal courses • Registration • Monitoring Tools: • Conversation strategies • Insight on language supply • Visiting language providers • Insight on language levels

Skillhouses in Brabant
The ‘Foundation language for life’ receives a subsidy from the Dutch government. With this subsidy the foundation develops free studying materials for the Target groups and trainings for volunteers.
Language practice group
Volunteers of the Language practice group Tasks: • To guide participants • Determine learning purpose • Practice basic Dutch language skills • Social inclusion • Possible refering to a formal course as well as other basic skill courses Tools: • Insight language levels (European Framework DSL Standard DFL) • Knowledge of materials • Different ways of work and methods (didactics)
Training and support volunteers • National Basic training : (4 x 3 hours) backgrounds, insight into language skills, language levels learning styles, knowledge of methods, different work forms, energizers • Substantial support volunteers: support volunteer meetings, walk-in hours (individual support) • Intake and test of the participants
Formal learning • Migrants: professional level increase • Refugees: integration program • Low literate people: professional reading and writing skills for work • Illiterates: literacy (mostly migrants)
Good practices Library Breda: • 134 Language course participants • 70 Digital skill course participants • 24 volunteers • Observation and guidance of volunteers • Adjust intake form of the Consultation hour • Develop decision tree • Individual support (specific problems ) • Training workshops about integration, reading skills, speaking skills

Conclusion By strengthening the partnership and support of volunteers and professionals within the Skill houses, we can guarantee the successful approach of a Life Long Learning!
