Year 6 2019/2020
Welcome! • Welcome to all parents and guardians. • Today’s presentation is here to introduce you to the Year 6 staff and inform you about what your child will be learning in Year 6 and how to support them.
Year 6 Class 19 - Teacher: Mrs Morley LSA: Miss French Class 20 - Teacher: Mr Doxey LSA: Mrs Lee Class 21 - Teachers: Miss Day LSA: Miss Weldon
Reading • In KS 2 we have a whole class approach to guided reading. This involves all children listening to and reading the same story and completing relevant activities around this. As a school, we focus on using the VIPERS to complete activities and answer questions. • As part of these activities, children read aloud, with a partner and independently to an adult. Often, children work within mixed ability groups which ensures the children gain support and can learn from their peers. • Once a week, the children read a different text within a small group or independently with their Teacher which focuses on their individual needs and forms evidence as part of assessment. They will also be part of a weekly inference group. • Some children, who need additional support, will read on a more regular one to one basis with an adult throughout the week. • The children also read independently throughout the week to practise fluency and speed. •
VIPERS
Reading • Children take home an independent reading book that is colour banded to suit their needs as a reader. • Please encourage your child to read at least 3 times a week with another person or independently. • Ensure your child is recording when they read within their reading diary and that it is being signed by an adult on a weekly basis.

Reading levels Children within Year 6, then have the opportunity of becoming free readers. They will have a specific area that they can access; however, they are given the freedom to choose a book of their choice if this is something that they prefer.
Extreme readers! We are currently promoting our extreme readers competition. The challenge is to take a photograph of your child reading somewhere 'extreme' and send it into school. We are hoping to promote reading for pleasure and would like to see as many children as possible participate. Every week, the most extreme reader in each year group will go on display in the hall, with others displayed in the phase area or on Twitter.
English • Your child will cover a wide range of genres in writing including: newspaper reports, creative writing, letter writing and more. A lot of the topics have cross curricular links enabling the children gain a depth of understanding in lots of different topics. • We have daily grammar sessions and there will be specific grammar focuses – that can be found on a flip card at the front of their writing books. • Weekly spellings are given from the Year 6 National Curriculum and also contain Year 6 high frequency words. There will usually be 15 spellings to learn. • Year 6 children’s English targets are taken from the National Curriculum. These have been condensed down into a sheet called ‘A TAFF sheet’. This will be sent home this Friday for you to look through.
Maths • In Maths we focus on using ‘DEEPER’ as a tool to encourage and develop an in depth understanding and a way to apply a problem solving approach. • Describe • Explain • Extend • Prove • Evaluate • Refine
Math’s targets The math’s targets will change on a regular basis. Some children will have been given an extra target for when they have completed this. These will be sent home when we move onto the next phase. Please support your child at home with these as much as possible. Could you also ensure you are practising timestables up to 12 with your children. This will aid them with the Year 6 content and being able to access it.
Homework For homework your children will be given: • 15 spellings • An activity linked to English or maths in the CGP books Homework is given out on a Friday to be returned on a Thursday.
Assessment The children are continually assessed by their teacher throughout the year using the school’s assessment system. This will form a termly level. Working towards Expected Greater depth Alongside this, they complete tests every term in the form of a written paper. They will complete maths, grammar and reading papers. These will be used by subject leaders to compare data and analyse any gaps/areas of focus. This aids the teacher’s planning and enables them to bridge gaps in knowledge. After these are analysed they will be sent home with your child.
