Welcome parents, guardians, and students to my classroom. My name is Ms. Cancienne and this is my 5 th year teaching at Clearwood Junior High. I love teaching and I especially love teaching the children in St. Tammany Parish! I graduated from Southeastern University in 1997 with a BS in Education. I attend professional development throughout the year to further my education. We will cover many mathematical concepts and the ways to apply them to real life situations. I am excited and look forward to this new school year.

What will students be learning this year in math? The Number System Students will explore integers, rational numbers, and irrational numbers. Students will use properties of exponents, scientific notation, square roots and cube roots to solve real-world problems. Functions and Linear Equations Expressions and Equations Students explore equivalent algebraic expressions. Students will solve equations and inequalities, including those with rational coefficients and variable on both sides of the equal sign, to model real-world situations. Students will explore the concept of function using input/output tables and maps. Functions will be compared using the concept of unit rate developed in 6 th grade. Students will graph and analyze linear functions; the concept of slope will be developed in the next unit. Ratios and Proportional Relationships Students will add to their understanding of ratios by exploring complex fractions. Proportions will be used to solve real-world problems. Also, students will solve real-world problems involving discount, tax, sales, percent increase/decrease, and markups. Statistics and Probability Students will explore random samples, make statistical inferences, and use measures of center to compare data. Additionally, students will explore experimental probability. Students will use scatter plots and frequency tables to make predictions about data. Linear models will be used to solve real-world problems. Geometry This unit will introduce new geometry concepts of transformations, congruence, similarity, parallel lines, transversals, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Students will find the area, surface area, and volume of composed figures that include quadrilaterals, triangles, circles, prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres. Standards Review Having completed all 7 th and 8 th gradelevel standards and in preparation for the following year, students will build fluency and application of systems of equations and transformations.

Teacher: ❖ ❖ ·Will have high expectations for all students. Will manage and maintain an appropriate atmosphere in the classroom that will lead to the success of all students. Students: ❖ ❖ Parents: · Are expected to be prepared for class. This includes them having all necessary books, materials, and assignments completed by the beginning of class. Are expected to participate in all classroom activities. ❖ ❖ Are expected to keep all communication lines open between themselves, the student and the teacher. Are expected to give support to their child. Everyone: ❖ ❖ Is expected to show respect and courtesy to everyone and their property. Is expected to come to class and keep a positive attitude.

Attendance is extremely important in this course, since they are learning 2 years of math in one year. It is the student’s responsibility to ask for any absent work. If the student knows that he/she will be absent, the student should ask for assignments before leaving. The student will be expected to take any test upon returning. For all excused absences the student will have two days for every day they were absent to make up their work and turn it in to the teacher.

All the assigned problems must be completed in pencil and on time for the student to obtain full credit on their math assignment. The student must show each step, not just the answer. If the math problem is a constructed response question, the answer must be written in a complete sentence. We will be using the RICE method for solving constructed responses. If as student misses an assignment, they are to check in the missed assignment binder.
