Wonderful Promises Part 2

God’s wonderful Promise to David

There are Two Everlasting Covenants of Promise: 1) the Promised Land to Abraham and his seed 2) the Promised Kingship to David and his seed EPHESIANS 2: 12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

We are considering only the second part of the everlasting covenant as it applies to the kingdom of God on earth and then we will consider the subjects of that kingdom who become heirs of the two promises given to Abraham and David.

This verse of David’s last words in the NKJ states: 2 Sam. 23: 5 - 5 “Although my house is not so with God, yet he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. For this is all my salvation and all my desire; will he not make it increase?

Yes! The Prophets spoke of this Everlasting Covenant to David ISAIAH 55: 3 Incline your ear, and come unto me; hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

That Promise made to David is this 2 SAMUEL 7: 16 And thy house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee; thy throne shall be established for ever.

David didn’t live long enough for his kingdom to be established forever SO the Promise was extended, to his seed verse 12: And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy Seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom

Paraphrasing this verse for emphasis: 2 Sam. 7: 12, 14 - 12 When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up a seed to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom… 14 I will be his father, and he will be my son.

This Promise was partly fulfilled in Israel's kings BUT. . . a future Seed of David would become king for ever – as we read in the verse 13: He shall build an house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. WHO IS THIS FUTURE KING?

David prophesied of him in one of his Psalms which is cited in Acts 2: 30 Psalms 132: 11 The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.

Well, the people of Jesus’ day called him the Son of David – a title of Messiah. Matthew 12: 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? They were calling Jesus the Messiah.

The Jews were waiting for a Messiah. Many said. . . this is the Prophet. Others said , this is the Messiah. . . Hath not the scripture said, That Messiah cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was? John 7: 40 -42

Where in the OT is the prophecy of Messiah? Deuteronomy 18: 15 The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him shall ye hearken.

Matthew 1: 1 links the genealogy of Jesus back to David And Micah 5: 2 says where he will be born : But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, thou art little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me to be ruler in Israel. . . SO, JESUS is the expected ruler that will sit on a throne in the lineage of Israel’s kings.

The apostle Peter says Yes! Acts 2: 29 -31 let me speak freely unto you of the patriarch David. . . being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Messiah to sit on his throne; he seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Messiah. . .

Jesus himself affirms this fact: Revelation 22: 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright and morning star.

This same angel affirmed this fact at his birth: LUKE 1: 32, 33 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Then…. The Promise to David will ultimately be fulfilled by Christ?

A king must have subjects so this is where we come in. Galatians 3: 27 -29 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

The heirs are given the land promised to Abraham. This fulfills the first part of the everlasting covenants of promise.

A kingdom must have administrators so this is where we come in. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, And made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. Revelation 1: 6

Some will be given more responsibility. I say to you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Matthew 19: 29

The heirs are given the kingdom that was promised to David with Jesus as the head – its called the kingdom of God on earth. This fulfills the second part of the everlasting covenants of promise.

By being in Christ Jesus: EPHESIANS 2: 12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were afar off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. . .

By making a covenant : Hebrew 13: 20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant. . .

By being Baptized in his name: Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Romans 6: 3

Being faithful in your service: and be faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. . . I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. Revelation 2: 10, 19

The New Testament embraces the Everlasting Covenants of promise. And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. Hebrews 9: 15

Extended to Jewish converts : Ezekiel 16: 60 Nevertheless I will remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will establish unto thee an everlasting covenant.

Extended to Jewish converts : Jeremiah 32: 40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

It’s a future promise to both Jews & Gentiles: Jeremiah 50: 5 In those days. . . the children of Israel. . . shall ask the way to Zion with their faces thitherward, saying, Come, and let us join ourselves to the LORD in a perpetual covenant that shall not be forgotten.

First to the Jews of Jesus’ day: Behold the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah. Jeremiah 31: 31 Cited in Hebrews 8: 9 Not according to the covenant I made with their fathers in the day when I took them out of Egypt. . . WHAT NEW COVENANT?

Jesus’ words. . . Matthew 26: 28 Drink ye all of it; For this represents my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remissions of sins. This was celebrated by the very apostles who were all Jews of Jesus’ day.

Then it was offered to the Gentiles of Jesus’ day: 1 Corinthians 11: 24 And after the same manner also the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup represents the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as often as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. The Corinthians were a mixture of Greeks, Romans and Jewish believers.

Paraphrasing: To Jewish converts: Acts 13: 32 -35 - 32 “We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. To Gentile converts: Romans 1: 1 -4 - Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God— 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David,

Then to everyone in our day

Paraphrasing: Rom. 9: 7 6 It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7 Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your seed will be reckoned. ” 8 In other words, it is not the natural children who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s seed.

Paraphrasing: Rom. 4: 11, 12 - So then, he is the father of all who believe” Gal. 3: 7 - 7 Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham

“If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. ” Gal 3: 29

This is standard Bible teaching from early pioneer Christadelphian writers. John Thomas wrote about The Two Everlasting Covenants of promise in Elpis Israel:

THE KINGDOM AND THRONE OF DAVID “There are, as we have seen, two everlasting covenants of promise upon which the kingdom of God is based – the one made with Abraham, and the other with David. The former gives the land of Canaan to their Seed for ever; the latter, the kingdom established upon it, as long as the moon endures. They are called David’s because his family alone can possess the kingdom. David’s kingdom, however, is also ‘the kingdom of God and of his Anointed’, or Christ; for, whether David, or David’s Son of the 28 th generation after him, sit upon the throne, they are both the Lord’s Anointed, and ruling as His representatives in His kingdom. ” page 304
