The Ten Commandments God loves us and promises to be present in our lives.

The Ten Commandments First, I must honor God, Second, honor His Name, Third, on His day be holy, this will be my aim. Fourth, I must be obedient, Fifth, be kind and true, Sixth, be pure in all I say and see and hear and do. Seventh, I must be honest Eighth, be truthful in all things I say Ninth, be pure in mind and heart and all I think and desire each day. Tenth, I must be satisfied, not be jealous come what may. These are God's Ten Commandments, These I must obey.

In the Old Testament, we read that God delivered the Hebrew people from slavery in Egypt and gave Moses the Ten Commandments to guide the Hebrews in building a new life, filled with God’s peace and love.

After Moses came down from the mountain, the two stone tablets were placed in a chest called the Ark of the Covenant to keep them safe during the journey to the promised land. The Jews or Israelites as they were known then, carried this box with them wherever they went.

God made the covenant with the Hebrew people. A covenant is an agreement. Moses promised God that the Jews would keep all of the Commandments.

The first three commandments concern love of God, and the other seven love of neighbor.

1 st Commandment: I am the Lord, your God. You shall not have other gods besides me.

2 nd Commandment: You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.

3 rd Commandment: Remember to keep holy the Sabbath Day.

4 th – 6 th Commandments: guide us in respecting the gift of life.

7 th Commandment: guides us in respecting other people’s property.

8 th Commandment: helps us to be honest and truthful.

9 th and 10 th Commandments: remind us to be satisfied with the gifts God gave us.

Sacred Images We may have statues or pictures of God, Mary and the saints, to help us pray. We treat these sacred images with respect and care. We do not worship them. We worship only God.

S aint Teresa of Avila was born in Spain in 1515. Her father sent her to a Carmelite convent at aged 16. She felt that material things kept her from God. She taught the other nuns how to live simply, spending more time in prayer. When we place God first in our lives, we are responding to God’s covenant with love.
