Introduction of the Topic Right Form of Verbs (Part -1) English 2 nd Paper Classes: 9 -10

Learning outcomes After studying the lesson, the students will be able to; Øidentify the errors of the sentences Øwrite the sentences correctly Øable to apply this rules in creative writings.

1. Singular subject takes singular verb and plural subject takes plural verb. If the subject is 3 rd person singular number then it takes s/es at the end of the verb (present Simple tense). They play cricket. He writes a letter. 2. Universal truth, habitual fact, always, regularly, sometimes, often, generally, daily, everyday, occasionally, usually, normally indicate simple present tense. The sun sets in the west. He always disturbs the class.

3. Now, right now, today, at this moment, at present, day by day, this morning, this month/week, this year, indicate present continuous tense. She is reading a novel now. 4. Just, just now, already, yet, ever, lately, recently, meantime, have, has, had, it is the first time, that is the first time indicate present perfect tense. He has gone out just now. We have selected him captain. This is the first time we have gone to Dhaka. 5. Yesterday, long ago, long since, ago, last night, last month are the past indicators and it takes past form of the verb. Hena went to school yesterday. Last night I dreamt a sweet dream

6. No sooner had…. than/ scarcely had…. . when/hardly had…. when Hardly had we reached the college when the examination began. 7. Present indefinite/ present perfect +since+ past indefinite or Past indefinite+ since+ Past perfect Many years have passed since I came to sylhet. It was many years since I had come to sylhet. 8. Past perfect +before+ past indefinite or past indefinite + after+ past perfect The patient had died before the doctor came. I came after he had left the country.

9. Had better, had rather, would better, would rather, let take base form of the verb. You had better go home. 10. Modal verbs (shall- should, will-would, can-could, may-might, need, must, dare, ought to) take base form of the verbs. He can do the work easily. We shall overcome this pandemic. 11. Mind, worth, without, past, cannot help, could not help, with a view to, look forward to, would you mind, get used to, and preposition + ing. We could not help studying. I never thought of coping in the exam.

12. Every, each, everyone, everybody, everything, nobody, no one, nothing, somebody, someone, something, every day, whatever, whichever take singular verb. Everybody wants peace. Something is better than nothing. 13. It is time, it is high time, wish, fancy take past form of the verb. It is high time we changed our food habit. I wish I could be a child again.
