What is the ISS? ùThe ISS is a satellite orbiting the earth and was made by at least 5 different space agencies. A satellite is an object orbiting a planet. The Earth only has one natural satellite, the Moon. The ISS orbits 400 km above the Earth and will allow an almost permanent human presence in space for the next 10 to 15 years. The initial stand for the International Space Station and it is basically a laboratory in space and a home to 7 astronauts for a prolonged period of time. 02/12/2011 Espace Skills Course Page 3

ùThe Station is around 100 m in length and 80 m in width. [1] Overall it spans across an area as big as a football pitch. The Station is so big it had to be assembled in space, as there are no rockets big enough to transport it. The first of the four labs to be sent into space was the Russian “Zvezda” (Star). Then one year later, in 2001, the American “Destiny” was launched and in 2004 The Japanese “Kibo” (Hope) and the British “Columbus”. 02/12/2011 Espace Skills Course Page 4
