Health Education l Health Education: ¡The providing of accurate health information to help people make healthy choices. l Health Literacy: ¡Refers to a person’s capacity to learn and understand basic health information.
Health Literate l Health literate individual needs to be: l. A critical thinker and problem solver l. A responsible, productive citizen l. A self directed learner l. An effective communicator

CH 1. Your Health and Wellness How healthy are you in all of these areas? 1. Physical 2. Mental/Emotional 3. Social. Health: Is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well being.
Health Continuum l Health continuum ¡A concept that states “your health is always changing”. ------- Premature Death High Level of Health Remember Health is always changing!
Wellness l Wellness: ¡An overall state of well-being, or total health. Remember you need all of HEALTH (PMS(E)) to have WELLNESS!
Promoting Your Health l Lifestyle Factors : ¡Personal behaviors related to the way a person lives. This will determine your level of health.
Prevention and Health l Prevention: ¡Practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury. l If a smoker go outside or walk away from a nonsmoker.
Heredity ¡Refers to all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents. l Physical Traits ¡ Looks (hair color, eye color) ¡ Disease (heart, cancer) ¡ Addiction (drugs, alcohol) l Social Traits ¡ Behavior ¡ Attitudes l Mental Traits ¡ Including mental illness
Environment: Sum total of your surroundings. 1. Physical 1. Where you live 2. Social 1. Peers l Culture: ¡ The collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group. 1. 2. 3. 4. Attitude Behavior Media Technology
l Risk behaviors: Actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. ¡ Make sure you can recognize a risky behavior 1. Unhealthy diets 2. Drug use 3. Sexual behaviors 4. Physical inactivity 5. Simple things like not wearing a seat belt or helmet. Cumulative Risk: related risks that increase in effect with each added risk. Example: Smoking and getting sunburns. It’s more than one risk factor added together.
Abstaining from Risk Behaviors l Abstinence: avoiding harmful behaviors. Example: not using drugs or avoiding sexual behaviors. l. How you behave affects not only yourself but others around you. l. The End!
