Curriculum v. Language Arts v. Reading v The Journey’s Adopted Reading series will be

Curriculum v. Language Arts v. Reading v The Journey’s Adopted Reading series will be utilized for whole group reading lessons. Students will be tested weekly to be sure they understand the vocabulary and content in the text. v Students will be tested on the grammar standards taught that week. v Small reading groups and literacy stations will be utilized daily to build individual skills. v Students will be tested weekly on supplemental texts for variety.

Timed Tests q. Per CTA curriculum standards, first grade students are given 90 seconds

Timed Tests q. Per CTA curriculum standards, first grade students are given 90 seconds to complete 30 addition or subtraction facts. Please note that this is the goal for the END of first grade. Please do not expect that your child has met that goal already. q. A great way to see improvement on these scores is to practice at home. Flashcards can be purchased at the Dollar Store and there are MANY apps out there for smart phones, i. Pads, etc…. q. Our classes will graph student average scores 2 nd-4 th quarter and work towards increasing our math fact fluency.

Poems. As part of our CTA curriculum your student will be required to memorize

Poems. As part of our CTA curriculum your student will be required to memorize and recite two poems to the class each quarter. When this comes home please take a few days to practice with your child. When they are ready please sign and send in the page. Some quarters there will only be one poem and one set of sight words. Please practice the sight words at home and when the student is ready they will read them to me!

Homework? ? -Yes!!!! + Students will have homework every evening Monday through Thursday. +Each

Homework? ? -Yes!!!! + Students will have homework every evening Monday through Thursday. +Each evening, students will have two math pages (fact practice and homework) that review and reinforce the concepts we are learning in school. They will also have a grammar/reading activity to complete. Please spend no more than 15 minutes on each activity (math and grammar). +Students will also have Spelling practice each evening. Parents will help their children study 10 words Monday, 20 words Tuesday, and 30 words on Wednesday as part of the homework. +In addition, we ask that you read to or listen to your child read for 20 minutes each evening. Please indicate this on the reading log. Do not include this time on the front of the homework packet. +Homework is due every morning at the beginning of the school day. Please be sure to have a parent look over homework after your child has completed it. + Students have been given a green homework folder. Papers on the right side of the folder are for home, and papers on the left side of the folder should be completed and returned to school the next day. Please check your child’s folder nightly.

Spelling • Every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, students will enter 10 new words into their pink and white notebook for a total of 30 spelling words per week. Please don’t have students practice writing spelling words in their pink and white notebook, as it is used ONLY for entering words at school. • Pink and white notebooks are taken home and returned DAILY so students can practice spelling words. Practice in any way you wish. • Dictation sentences will start on list 2. • All spelling tests will take place on Friday.

Communication!!! • There will be a first grade newsletter sent home every week! Please watch for and read it! It is filled with important information! • There is also a school wide notice sent home weekly. • Please visit our First Gators website. Go to the classrooms tab and click on first grade and at the top of the list of teachers will be the link to First Gators. Spelling, School events, Math, Reading and Spalding information will be updated weekly.

CONFERENCES !! Conferences are August 30 th and 31 st this year! Dismissal will be at 11: 10 a. m. Conferences are scheduled earlier in the year so that we may communicate to you any concerns that we may have. Please remember to sign up for the Parent Portal. CUSD is going green and all progress reports and report cards are paperless. Using the Parent Portal will also help you keep track of grades during the year, school notices, and important information for the school. Please make sure you visit the parent portal to update your emergency contact information.
