Community Action The East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation (ECKAN) is a community action agency, which has been in existence since 1966 serving lowincome persons in Anderson, Coffey, Douglas, Franklin, Johnson, Lyon, Miami, Morris, and Osage Counties.

ECKAN Head Start. . . Encourages the role of parents as their child’s first and most important teacher. Provides services that are responsive to each child and family’s ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage. Offers comprehensive services. Promotes self-sufficiency, supports healthy growth and development. Promotes school readiness for each child.

Program Options *****Insert County Specific Available Options***** Home Based 0 -3: Includes a 90 minute, weekly home visit from a Home Visitor. Includes 2 socializations per month Includes family goal development services Includes health, nutrition, transition, and social services Center Based 3 -5: Includes preschool curriculum Includes 2 home visits and 2 parent teacher conferences per year Includes family goal development services Includes health, nutrition, transition, and social services

Attendance The primary goal of Head Start is to prepare children & families for

Attendance The primary goal of Head Start is to prepare children & families for school. Attendance is a very important part of the kindergarten readiness goals. The expectation is that parents understand attendance is required. ECKAN Head Start understands there will be times when children will be unable to attend. If children are absent or a home visit needs to be rescheduled, parents need to call and share the reason for the absence/cancellation with a staff member.

Mandated Reporting All ECKAN Head Start staff persons are mandated reporters. This means, if

Mandated Reporting All ECKAN Head Start staff persons are mandated reporters. This means, if there is any suspicion regarding a child’s well -being, all staff persons are required by law to report their concerns. Staff are trained in recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect.

Parent Background Check Parents are always encouraged to volunteer within the classroom. Kansas Childcare

Parent Background Check Parents are always encouraged to volunteer within the classroom. Kansas Childcare Regulations require ECKAN Head Start to submit a KBI report of all regular volunteers to the state prior to spending time within the classroom.

Emergency Contacts At least 3 people should be maintained on your child’s Emergency/Contact Pick-Up

Emergency Contacts At least 3 people should be maintained on your child’s Emergency/Contact Pick-Up list I. D. will be required Your child WILL NOT be released to anyone who is not on the Emergency/Contact Pick-Up List The Emergency/Contact Pick-Up List can be changed by the parent at any time. In person Written, signed, and dated request Children who are not picked up Staff will call emergency Contacts If no one can be reached and the parents have not called the child will be considered in “Need of Care” All contact Information Should be Up to Date at all Times!

Weather Plans Staff will stay informed about severe weather When there is a tornado, all children will stay in the tornado shelter During a thunderstorm, children will be kept inside School Cancellations When the local school district closes school due to inclement weather, ECKAN Head Start will also be closed Home Visitors will call to cancel and re-schedule home visits when necessary

Emergency Notification In the event of an emergency, parents will be contacted immediately Injury/Illness
