Today’s Objectives • SWBAT explain the aspects of life in Cuba that led to the Spanish-American war. • SWBAT create a timeline of the Spanish-American war.

Keep in mind… In this lesson, you are going to have to stretch to create connections between a visual representation of time to a written representation of time. You need to be able to THINK about what makes sense logically.

The Spanish-American War • Cuba was a colony – the Spanish government that was ruling over them was across the ocean. • Like most colonized areas, the Spanish government was dictatorial when dealing with Cuba. • Cuba revolted against Spain, with the support of the United States. • Important note: the Cubans were revolting, for them this was a revolution. But this is the Spanish-American war because Spain and the US were the big players and lost/won the most out of the fight.

Important Questions • What do you think the atmosphere was like in Cuba before the start of the Spanish-American War? • Why did Cubans want to revolt against Spain? • Why was the Cuban Revolution called the Spanish-American War?
