Tyldesley St George’s Central CE Primary School 20 year anniversary
How did our school get its name?
There were initially two schools that served Tyldesley centre: Central CE Primary School – Opened in 1893 on the site next to where our current school is built. St. George’s CE Primary school – Opened in 1829 on the street opposite St George’s Church.
School history Although both schools had provided fantastic education for over 100 years, the opportunity arose to build one large school to replace both of the existing schools as they were in very poor structural condition. When two schools join together, this is known as ‘amalgamation’.
How was this done? In August 1997, the two schools amalgamated. As the new building had not yet been built, this meant having all of the infant children in the building at the Central site and all of the juniors at the St. George’s site.
Building begins Building work on the new site began in April 1998. The picture below shows the foundation stone being laid.
The building work continued over the next few months.
By November 1998, the school was built and everyone was ready to move in. The first day in the new school was November 11 th 1998.
The opening of the new school then meant that the old Central school could then be demolished.
Official opening Although children had been in the new building since the previous November, the school was officially opened on 23 rd April 1999 (St. George’s day).
Many special guests were invited, including the Mayor and the Bishop.
How are we going to commemorate the 20 year anniversary of our school? To begin the celebrations, we are going to hold a special assembly on Friday, during which each class will present work they have completed based on a news story from the period between November 1998 – April 1999.
Press release We will be inviting former pupils, teaching staff and members of the local community who remember our school being built into school to tell us about their memories. These will be filmed and will form part of our celebrations on St. George’s Day.
Art Project Shortly after the school was opened in 1998, an art project was completed to help get the new school established:
Another project was then completed in 2007 in preparation for the school’s 10 year anniversary. This is the piece of work that can still be seen on the back of Mrs Jeffries’ classroom near the car park:
For the school’s 20 th anniversary, we would like to create a new piece of artwork in its place to reflect the school and community today.
