Kingdoms of West Africa As African civilizations developed, great trading states arose. Traveling across the desert and over the wide Indian Ocean, traders from these states helped make their people rich and powerful. Trade not only resulted in a transfer of ivory, gold, salt and other valuable merchandise but also in a transfer of cultures, spreading religions, languages, and new ideas.

Berbers • More than just trade goods were exchanged through the gold and salt trade. Berbers from North Africa and Ghanaians from south of the Sahara had different religions, customs, and ideas. The gold-salt trade provided an opportunity for these two cultures to interact peacefully. This interaction facilitated the spread of new forms of technology and new ideas about religion and science. The Berbers helped spread Islam to West Africa.
